THE TEAM NEWS

SYDNEY ROOSTERS

  • Sydney Roosters finished last season with a wet sail as they produced a brilliant late run of form to finish in the top eight and even managed a play-off win.
  • The Tricolours won their final five matches of the regular season before toppling Cronulla Sharks in the first week of the finals before falling to a late defeat to Melbourne Storm and in their bid to challenge this year, they have added some grunt to their pack in the shape of Spencer Leniu.

BRISBANE BRONCOS

  • Brisbane Broncos blew a 24-8 lead in the Grand Final against Penrith Panthers, allowing their opponents to score 18 unanswered points in the final 16 minutes.
  • The Broncos will have to deal with those demons as they aim to go one better this year and they will hope that shifting Selwyn Cobbo from the wing to the centres can aid their task.

Starting 13: 1. Reece Walsh 2. Jesse Arthars 3. Kotoni Staggs 4. Selwyn Cobbo 5. Deine Mariner 6. Ezra Mam 7. Adam Reynolds 8. Corey Jensen 9. Billy Walters 10. Payne Haas 11. Brendan Piakura 12. THE PREDICTION

Sydney Roosters underwhelmed for much of 2023 but finished strongly and gave a glimpse of what may be to come this year. They are capable of competing for the Premiership but will want to get off to a fast start this time around having needed a late push just to make the top eight last year. Brisbane Broncos probably should have won the showpiece having held a 16-point lead deep into the Grand Final with Penrith Panthers but imploded and failed to see the game out. That will still be on the minds of the players here and while they start as favourites, this is a tough game to call with a tight tussle expected.

TIP: Winning margin - 1-12 points
