UKRAINE PREVIEW: LAST-GASP SALVATION
Under the management of former Ukraine international Ruslan Rotan, Ukraine began their tournament with a frustrating 2-1 loss to Iraq in a game in which Valentyn Rubchynskyi had given the Ukrainians a second-half lead.
In their second game against Morocco, they once again went ahead before Soufiane Rahimi equalised from the spot in the 65th minute for the north Africans. However, Ukraine snatched all three points with a 98th minute winner scored by Ihor Krasnopir.
ARGENTINA PREVIEW: PUTTING RIGHT SOME WRONGS
Javier Mascherano described the first game of Argentina’s Olympic campaign as ‘the biggest circus’ he had ever seen when Argentina believed they had rescued a point with a 106th minute equaliser only for a pitch invasion to suspend the game for over two hours. The players returned to play the final few moments of the game but not until VAR actually chalked off what was Argentina’s second of the game.
So, still reeling from a shock defeat to the Moroccans, Argentina then square up to Iraq and Aymen Hussein scored an equaliser for the Iraqis on the stroke of half-time. However, second-half goals from Luciano Gondou and Ezequiel Fernandez gave Argentina control of the group.
UKRAINE VS ARGENTINA PREDICTION
Throughout the period of Argentinian dominance in international football in recent years, they have done it the hard way and there has been plenty of drama and plenty of penalty shootout victories. This tournament appears no different as they hunt for gold but do so in an extremely entertaining manner. Ukraine will fancy their chances of at least scoring against the South Americans but there is something about them to suggest Argentina will find a way through.
