Germany have often been one of the strongest sides in the women’s game but failed to qualify for the 2020 Olympics. They are currently fourth in the world and will be expected to compete as they kick off against an Australian side that lost the bronze medal match to the United States three years ago.

GERMANY PREVIEW: IN FLUX

Germany head into the tournament with an interim head coach in the dugout with Horst Hrubesch taking charge of DFB-Frauenteam. They come into this on the back of a 4-0 hammering of Austria in their most recent warm-up match last week.

That means they have now won six of their last seven matches since losing to France in the UEFA Women’s Nations League in February. They still have some stars in their squad, most notably their 139-cap skipper, Alexandra Popp.

AUSTRALIA PREVIEW: SAM KERR-LESS AUSSIES

The big pre-tournament news coming out of the Australian camp is that their captain, and arguably best player, Sam Kerr remains unavailable due to injury. That will mean a lot of the onus to step up for Tony Gustavsson’s side will fall onto the shoulders of Caitlin Foord.

The Matilda's come into this one on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Canada in a friendly a couple of weeks ago. That ended a five-match unbeaten run of form for the Australians as they seek amends for missing out on a medal last time.

GERMANY VS AUSTRALIA PREDICTION

We have two relatively evenly matched sides as Germany face Australia in their opening match and a result is genuinely difficult to call. The Matilda’s will be put down as a ‘genuine medal hope’ within the Australian Olympic team but they are facing a German side that are looking to finally put together some results and performances after a difficult 12 months or so. We could end up having quite an entertaining game for the neutral in which both teams scoring does seem like a good bet.

GERMANY VS AUSTRALIA TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
