Who is the current world record holder of the women’s 100m butterfly? Gretchen Walsh (USA) with 55.18 in Indianapolis on 15th June 2024

PREDICTION

There is a clear standout favourite for this event on Sunday with American swimmer Gretchen Walsh going for gold and the main question for this one would be whether or not she can actually beat her world record. Walsh swam 100m butterfly in just 55.18 seconds in Indianapolis last month and is in pole position to take Olympic gold.

Her closest competitor is expected to be her compatriot Torri Huske with the rest of the field some way away from the two Team USA swimmers. Defending champion of this event, Canadian athlete Maggie Mac Neil, is in contention for a podium spot, though not expected to challenge for the title.

TIP: GRETCHEN WALSH (USA) TO WIN

Who is the current world record holder of the men’s 100m breaststroke? Adam Peaty (GBR) with 56.88 in Gwangju on 21st July 2019

PREDICTION

If Team GB’s Adam Peaty can take home the men’s 100m breaststroke gold medal then he will become the first Brit to win three consecutive Olympics golds in the same event. The world and Olympic record holder, now 30, is no longer the dominant force in the event and is actually not even necessarily the favourite for gold.

The biggest challenger to Peaty’s crown is China’s Qin Haiyang. The 25-year-old set an Asian record of 57.69 seconds in the 2023 World Championships last summer. Beyond Haiyang, there are no really big threats with the likes of Nic Fink, Joshua Yong, Evgeniy Somov and Sun Jiajun all outsiders. It appears to be between Peaty and Haiyang but Peaty has mastered his ability to peak just at the right time so backing the Briton to make history would be a smart move.

TIP: ADAM PEATY (GBR) TO WIN
