SHAMIL GAZIEV VS DON’TALE MAYES LOWDOWN
Shamil Gaziev (12-1) has a lot to prove after a weak performance in his last fight at UFC Fight Night 238. He headlined in just his second UFC fight which was with Jairzinho Rozenstruik and gassed early eventually getting TKO’d in the fourth round. That was the first loss of his career and now he wants to regain the form that capped off his 12-fight streak where he knocked out Martin Buday last year.
Don’Tale Mayes (11-6(1)) is coming off a solid win and unanimous decision over Caio Machado at UFC on ESPN 55. That bumped his patchy UFC record up to 4-4(1) and came in response to losing a unanimous decision to Rodrigo Nascimento at UFC Fight Night 231 in Brazil last year.
SHAMIL GAZIEV VS DON’TALE MAYES PREDICTION
We expect a very motivated Gaziev to turn up with the support of the crowd behind him. He will have the confidence in trading on the feet, but ultimately call upon his wrestling to shut Mayes down.
He will have to respect Mayes’ power. He is nowhere near the calibre of striker of Rozenstruik, but he will have the speed and three-inch reach advantage. We can see Mayes landing some big blows, but that will just force Gaziev to initiate the clinch earlier.
We expect Mayes to test Gaziev early, but the weight and grappling of the Bahrain native should grind him down for a late finish.
