ILIA TOPURIA: FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMP MAKES FIRST TITLE DEFENSE
The Georgian/Spanish featherweight champion Ilia Topuria (15-0) puts his belt and his 100% winning record on the line against Max Holloway in what should be an absolute thriller. He won the title in his 15th pro fight by knocking out Alexander Volkanovski and he clearly is a man with great belief and confidence right now. There is a real air about him and he is backing up his trash talking and confidence bravado with incredibly high level performances. He now meets Max Holloway who will be his first title defence and another test for him.
MAX HOLLOWAY: FIGHT OF THE NIGHT SPECIALIST AIMING TO REGAIN FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE
Max Holloway (26-7) gets another shot at the featherweight title and the Hawaiian will be so fired up for this opportunity. The 32-year-old has arguably gotten better with age and he has won five of his last six in the UFC. In fact, the only man to beat him in the last five years is Alexander Volkanovski and he has lost to him on three separate occasions in title fights. Otherwise, Holloway has been on a tear and beaten allcomers and now he seeks to beat the man that beat Volkanovski.
ILIA TOPURIA VS MAX HOLLOWAY PREDICTION
The headliner at UFC 308 promises to be an absolute classic and it is a great test of Ilia Topuria’s credentials as a UFC champion. Max Holloway will pose him every question and it will be interesting to see if Topuria has all of the answers.
Topuria does not possess the CV that Holloway does but the knockout of Volkanovski put a real statement out there. The very fact he stopped the man who had beaten Holloway three times is the one real comparative measure we have.
Of course, MMA does not always work out that logically. Holloway is more than capable of stopping anybody on his day as he has shown time and time again. His knockout of Justin Gaethje last time out showed he is as dangerous as ever.
We just edge Topuria to retain his belt but this could be an all-out war. He has the ability to wrestle Holloway and control the fight for long spells and avoid Holloway’s superb striking. If he fights cleverly, that is surely his route to victory. We can see Holloway causing him some issues with the stand up, but ultimately expect Topuria to grind it out and get the points win.
