THE LOWDOWN

BAYERN MUNICH

Six-time Champions League winners Bayern Munich had their hopes of a seventh title ended last season by Man City in the quarter-finals and after having only won the 2022-23 Bundesliga by virtue of goal difference after finishing level on points with Borussia Dortmund, the ‘Rekordmeister’ have made moves in the summer transfer window to give themselves the best chance of success in all competitions this season, but particularly in Europe.

Thomas Tuchel’s side lost 0-3 in the DFL-Supercup to RB Leipzig to begin the campaign, but have since picked up ten points from a possible 12 in the Bundesliga. Their most recent game was a top of the table clash against Bayer Leverkusen which saw Bayern twice take the lead, but twice be pegged back. It will have hurt though that Leverkusen’s second equaliser came deep into second half injury time through a contentious penalty.

MAN UTD

Man Utd will really hope that the Champions League provides them with a welcome distraction and an opportunity to boost the confidence of their players following a run of three defeats from their last four games in the Premier League. Pressure is building on manager Erik ten Hag, who is a former Champions League semi-finalist whilst in charge of Ajax and successfully guided the Red Devils back into the top four after they had finished sixth-place the previous season.

Going into this one as underdogs could well play into Man Utd’s favour with expectations amid supporters likely to be low following such a poor start to their domestic campaign. A first start for new signing Rasmus Hojlund was arguably the only bright spot of United’s weekend loss at home to Brighton and the 20-year-old Dane could have a big part to play in attack for the visitors in Munich.

THE TEAM NEWS

BAYERN MUNICH

Winger Kingsley Coman missed Bayern’s 2-2 draw with Leverkusen this past Friday due to a thigh injury but has since resumed team training and could return to the side. Also, back in training is full-back Raphael Guerreiro, who is yet to feature this season. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer remains Bayern’s only definite absentee with Sven Ulreich continuing to deputise between the sticks.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Ulreich; Mazraoui, Kim, Upamecano, Davies; Kimmich, Goretzka; Sane, Musiala, Coman; Kane

UNAVAILABLE: Neuer (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Coman (Fitness), Guerreiro (Fitness)

MAN UTD

Both midfielder Mason Mount and defender Raphael Varane could each be available for Man Utd, with Varane in particular a hugely influential figure within the United backline and desperately needed back in the side. However, three full-backs will miss out through injury, those being Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. New signing Sofyan Amrabat is training, but away from the squad.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Onana; Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Reguilon; Casemiro, Eriksen; Garnacho, Fernandes, Rashford; Hojlund

UNAVAILABLE: Amrabat (Fitness), Shaw (Injured), Malacia (Injured), Wan-Bissaka (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Mount (Fitness) Varane (Fitness)

THE PREDICTION

One of the standout fixtures across this round of Champions League games between two European heavyweights. Whilst a long time has passed since that memorable final in 1999 when Man Utd came back from a goal down in second half stoppage time to stun Bayern Munich in Barcelona, it certainly doesn’t dampen the occasion. Bayern Munich have looked a lot stronger from an attacking point of view this campaign mainly due to the presence of a world class striker in Kane, but on the flip-side have just one clean sheet to their name after five games in all competitions. Man Utd are struggling even more so to keep out the goals, conceding three times in back-to-back fixtures. However, they are very much capable of finding the net themselves and are expected to cause the Bayern backline significant problems. With that in mind, both teams to score appears on the cards here, regardless of who comes out on top.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
