THE LOWDOWN

BAYERN MUNICH

We still have two rounds of games to go and Bayern Munich have already wrapped up top spot in Group A, along with a place in the round of 16. The ‘Rekordmeister’ boast a perfect record of 12 points from a possible 12 and are unbeaten in an astonishing 38 Champions League group stage fixtures, a run going all the way back to 2017. Not only that, the six-time European champions have won the last 17 of those 38 matches and scored at least once in each one.

Just maintaining those records should serve as motivation enough for Bayern to take this game seriously despite there being nothing at stake from their point of view aside from extending their six-match winning streak in all competitions at the Allianz Arena.

COPENHAGEN

You have to go back to the 2010-11 season for the last time that Copenhagen won back-to-back Champions League group stage matches, but following a memorable 4-3 triumph over Man Utd in the last round of fixtures, the Danish champions have the opportunity to achieve the feat again here, although they have their work cut out against a truly formidable opponent.

It’s important to remember that Copenhagen so nearly salvaged a point in the reverse fixture between these two sides in Denmark, Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich making an incredible save in what was the final play of the game to keep out the home team. Since then, Copenhagen have moved up to second-place in Group A, leaving knockout qualification still in their hands.

THE TEAM NEWS

BAYERN MUNICH

Both defender Matthijs de Ligt and attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala won’t feature here, the latter having suffered a hamstring injury and Bayern’s last Champions League fixture against Galatasaray. However, the big question is whether Thomas Tuchel will start Harry Kane or opt to give his star striker a rest, with Kane having racked up 14 goals across Bayern’s last eight home games in all competitions.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Laimer, Upamecano, Kim, Davies; Goretzka, Kimmich; Gnabry, Muller, Coman; Tel

UNAVAILABLE: De Ligt (Injured), Musiala (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Guerreiro (Fitness), Kim (Fitness), Mazraoui (Fitness), Choupo-Moting (Injured)

COPENHAGEN

The visitors will be hoping that striker Andreas Cornelius is passed fit enough to play from the start this match after coming off the bench on Saturday, although both Davit Khocholava and William Clem will definitely be missing. Georgian Khocholava has a knee injury, whilst Clem is nursing a foot problem.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Grabara; Ankersen, Vavro, Diks, Jelert; Lerager, Falk, Goncalves; Elyounoussi, Cornelius, Achori

UNAVAILABLE: Khocholava (Injured), Clem (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Cornelius (Fitness)

THE KEY STATS

  • Bayern have won 28 and drawn one of their last 29 home matches in the UEFA Champions League group stage, since losing 3-2 against Man City in December 2013.
  • Bayern have lost only two of their last 25 UEFA Champions League matches (W20 D3).
  • Bayern have scored in their last 42 home matches in the UEFA Champions League group stage. The last time was in 2009 vs Bordeaux.
  • Bayern have won seven of their previous nine UEFA Champions League matches against Danish clubs (L2).
  • Copenhagen have lost only two of their previous ten European matches this season (W4 D4).
  • Copenhagen are without a win in their previous 13 UEFA club competition matches against German teams (D4 L9).

THE PREDICTION

With or without Harry Kane, Bayern Munich should dominate the vast majority of proceedings here and put Copenhagen’s backline under huge pressure throughout. Standards are notoriously high at Bayern and anyone who plays will be expected to perform to a high standard if they are to keep their place moving forward. Copenhagen’s record against German teams in Europe is notoriously poor and the strength-in-depth of this Bayern squad will surely see them overpower and overwhelm the visitors, as they did against Galatasaray in the end when Tuchel’s men scored twice in the final ten minutes. Back Bayern to triumph by at least two clear goals.

TIP: BAYERN MUNICH TO WIN WITH -1 HANDICAP
