THE LOWDOWN

ARSENAL

Arsenal return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign, when Arsene Wenger was in charge, and there is plenty of expectation on Mikel Arteta’s men to qualify from the group.

The Gunners’ last seven participations in the competition resulted in round of 16 exits, and reaching that stage will be the minimum expectation on a team who pushed Man City close to the Premier League title last season.

PSV

PSV booked their place in the group stage by coming through a play-off double-header with Rangers, avenging their defeat to the Scottish side at the same stage last year.

The Dutch side sit top of the Eredivisie table with a 100% record after four games, and are unbeaten in their last 26 games in all competitions – a run stretching back to February, when they lost to Sevilla in the Europa League.

THE TEAM NEWS

ARSENAL

Thomas Partey remains on the sidelines so Mikel Arteta has plenty of options in the middle of the park. Fabio Vieira was selected in the weekend victory over Everton, while Kai Havertz is another candidate. However, the experienced Jorginho may be preferred in the Champions League.

Gabriel Martinelli picked up an injury against the Toffees and his replacement, Leandro Trossard, found the net, so the Belgian is likely to operate on the left side of Arsenal's attack here. Gabriel Jesus, meanwhile, could be preferred to Eddie Nketiah up front.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Rice, Ødegaard, Jorginho; Saka, Jesus, Trossard

UNAVAILABLE: Partey (Injured), Elneny (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Martinelli (Injured)

PSV

There is a major concern over winger Noa Lang, who was withdrawn injured in the second half of PSV's victory over NEC in the Eredivisie on Saturday. If the Dutchman fails to recover, Hirving Lozano - his replacement in that match - is likely to start.

Defenders Armando Obispo and Mauro Junior are the only confirmed absentees in the PSV camp.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Benítez; Dest, Ramalho, Bella-Kotchap, Van Aanholt; Schouten, Saibari, Veerman; Bakayoko, De Jong, Lozano

UNAVAILABLE: Obispo (Injured), Mauro Júnior (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Lang (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This is hardly a straightforward opening fixture for Arsenal on their return to the biggest stage in European football, with PSV currently riding an incredible run of 26 games without defeat in all competitions. Don't be surprised to see them put up stuff resistance here, with a draw very much on the cards at the Emirates Stadium. Alternatively, both teams to score holds some value, with PSV having scored in all 26 games of that aforementioned unbeaten run,

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
