THE LOWDOWN

Valencia

For much of the second-half of this campaign, Valencia appeared destined to drop into the second-tier. That relegation would have been viewed as the natural conclusion of off-field issues and protests but, since the appointment of Ruben Baraja, their performances and results have slightly improved and a slight improvement is, perhaps, all that is needed to avoid the drop this season.

The home team come into this on the back of a 2-1 victory away to Celta Vigo in their most recent outing, last weekend. Valencia have enjoyed an impressive run of form with just one defeat in their last five La Liga matches, collecting ten points in those games.

They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting 14th in the table but that position is not quite as safe as it may seem. With four games of the 2022/23 La Liga campaign to go, they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting three points above Getafe in the bottom three and the relegation places.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid come into this on the back of a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in the second-leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final, during the midweek. That quite harrowing defeat means Los Blancos have nothing to play for between now and early June.

Last weekend, Madrid decided to rest and rotate in their 1-0 win at home to relegation threatened Getafe. That game was a good representation of end of season apathy and their 4-0 shellacking at City was a good representation of a team that may well be ageing and ready for the season to end as quickly as possible.

Madrid have won the Copa del Rey but they are very much stumbling towards the end of the Liga season. What they will be hoping to avoid before a potential summer shake-up is finishing below their city rivals, Atletico, for the fifth time in nine years.

THE PREDICTION

These are two of Spain's most famous clubs that, to very, very different extents, have endured difficult campaigns. Ruben Baraja's improvement of Valencia in recent weeks means it does seem likely that the home team will avoid relegation this season. Carlo Ancelotti could well depart the Bernabeu in the summer, with the Italian heavily linked with the Brazilian national side, and, despite their poor performances, they will be keen to finish with a flourish. This could be quite an entertaining encounter on Sunday evening with goals to be expected.
