THE LOWDOWN

Real Sociedad

In each of the three previous seasons before this 2022/23 La Liga campaign, Real Sociedad have started the season extremely well before badly fading and missing out on a top four finish. This time around, though, under the management of Imanol Aguacil, La Real head into the final day of the season having already confirmed that elusive top four spot and, as a consequence, UEFA Champions League qualification.

In recent seasons, it has been Real Sociedad’s impressive defensive record that has allowed them to qualify for Europe and, once again, they have been tough to score against. They have let in just 34 goals so far this season with an intense midfield, consisting of Asier Illaramendi and Martin Zubimendi, the key to their side.

The visitors come into this on the back of a 2-1 defeat away to Atletico Madrid, whom they will join in the UEFA Champions League group stages next season, in their most recent outing, last weekend. The hosts had been unbeaten in their previous seven matches.

Sevilla

Sevilla are onto their third manager of the 2022/23 La Liga campaign after a difficult campaign in which they have fought against relegation for much of the season. Both Julen Lopetegui and Jorge Sampaoli were dismissed before Jose Luis Mendilibar’s appointment during the March international break. Since his appointment, the Andalusians have leapt from the aforementioned relegation battle to top seven contention, as well as reaching the UEFA Europa League final.

However, a top seven finish is now effectively meaningless for Sevilla as they come into this on the back of defeating Jose Mourinho’s Roma in Budapest in that UEFA Europa League final. Gonzalo Montiel scored the winning penalty in a 4-1 shootout victory which came after 120 feisty, stop-start minutes in a 1-1 draw.

Sevilla’s seventh UEFA Europa League title means they have already automatically qualified for the UEFA Champions League group stages for next season. Mendilibar’s reign has been an emphatically positive one with just defeat in 17 matches across all competitions over the last couple of months.

THE PREDICTION

Prior to the season when the fixtures came out, this one looked like it could be potentially pivotal in the top four race but, after 37 matches, there is no meaning on it. Real Sociedad have already assured themselves of a top four finish and UEFA Champions League qualification for the first time since they were knocked out in the group stages of the 2013/14 campaign. Sevilla, on the other hand, come into this on the back of a long night in Hungary as they won a European trophy making any hopes of a top seven finish redundant as they will join La Real in Europe's elite club competition. Given that, as well as with their home advantage, Real Sociedad are the favourites for this one.
