THE LOWDOWN

REAL MADRID

Coached by Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid have been as pragmatic and as effective as ever with their most impressive trait being the mentality and will to win that Los Blancos squads have exhibited throughout history. They have eventually climbed to the top-of-the-table and, with 15 games to go, will be confident of holding off the remarkable story of Girona this season.

They come into this one on the back of being held to a 1-1 draw by Atletico Madrid in the derby at the Bernabeu last weekend. Prior to that, though, they had confidently and impressively defeated Getafe by two goals to nil. The hosts of this almighty showdown on Saturday evening have suffered just two defeats across 32 matches this season and both of those defeats came away to Atletico Madrid.

GIRONA

It has, as mentioned, been an utterly remarkable story this season with Girona. Even taking into account the fact they are a part of the City Football Group, they have been astonishing as they mount a serious challenge for the Spanish title, competing with 14-time European champions Real Madrid. La Liga’s entertainers from last year have remained that way but combined it with effectiveness this season.

Michel’s Catalans have played 23 matches in La Liga so far this season and they are the top scorers with 52 goals scored. There has been an average of over three goals per games involving Girona this year, despite the fact three of their last four matches have been 0-0 or 1-0. They have suffered just one defeat, too, with that coming in the reverse fixture between these two in early October.

THE TEAM NEWS

REAL MADRID

Real Madrid remain with key defensive injury absentees as Thibaut Courtois as well as Eder Militao and David Alaba are unavailable for this one.

PREDICTED XI (4-1-2-1-2): Lunin; Vazquez, Carvajal, Rudiger, Mendy; Kroos; Valverde, Camavinga; Bellingham; Diaz, Rodrygo

UNAVAILABLE: Alaba (Injured), Militao (Injured), Courtois (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Nacho (Injured)

GIRONA

Both Daley Blind and Yangel Herrera are out suspended this weekend, as well as their long-term injury absentees, Toni Villa and David Lopez.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Gazzaniga; Couto, Garcia, Juanpe, Gutierrez; Torre, Garcia; Tsygankov, Martin, Savio; Portu

UNAVAILABLE: Blind (Suspended), Herrera (Suspended), Lopez (Injured), Casals (Injured), Villa (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Carlos (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Not many would have had this down as a potential title decider in mid-February when the season began. It has been a remarkably impressive campaign from both sides, in fairness, with the more magical story being the visitors, from a city with a population of just 100,000. Real Madrid are famous for grinding out victories in high pressure situations and are expected to do so again but with defensive injury issues and up against the best attacking team in the league, it should still be a thriller for the neutral.

TIP: REAL MADRID TO WIN & BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
