THE LOWDOWN

Real Betis

Under the management of Manuel Pellegrini, Real Betis have been very impressive and entertaining throughout the former Malaga, Manchester City, Real Madrid and West Ham United coach’s tenure. The Chilean, nicknamed ‘The Engineer’, has had to get pragmatic this season, though, with off-field financial issues leading to some major sales, such as Alex Moreno, and a lack of transfer spend. Despite that, they have remained effective in the top six of La Liga.

The home team do come into this on the back of an entertaining come from behind 2-1 victory in Catalonia away to Girona in their most recent outing, last weekend. In that encounter against top seven hopefuls, Migu Gutierrez put Girona ahead before a second-half brace from Spain international Borja Iglesias snatched three points for the Andalusians.

That win at Montilivi means they have suffered just one defeat in their last five matches as they confirm a top six spot and UEFA Europa League group stage qualification for the 2023/24 season.

Valencia

For much of this campaign, it did seem as though the Valencia would suffer an infamous relegation, amidst off-field protests and issues against their owner Peter Lim. The club, though, under the management of interim coach Ruben Baraja, who replaced Gennaro Gattuso, have enjoyed an impressive run of form in the last month or so as they head into the final day of the season very nearly safe – but not quite.

The visitors head to Andalusia to face Real Betis knowing it wouldn’t take an impossible set of results for them to find themselves in deep trouble. They come into this on the back of a 2-2 draw with Espanyol, in which they relegated the Catalans after a 93rd minute equalising goal from Samuel Lino.

That rescued point means they have suffered just two defeats in their last eight La Liga matches as they put together a resurgent run of form up and away from the bottom three and the relegation places. In those eight matches, they have collected an impressive 14 points.

THE PREDICTION

Heading into the final round of fixtures, Betis will be content to have already assured UEFA Europa League group stage qualification for the 2022/23 campaign. They are finishing the season with a flourish and it is expected that Pellegrini remains at the Benito Villamarin after the summer but it isn't entirely locked in. For Valencia to fall into the Segunda, Valladolid would have to beat Getafe whilst Almeria and Celta would also have to win, albeit all three have very winnable games, and Valencia lose in Seville. This could be quite a fun game given the fact Betis have little to play for and Valencia are being quite open in their dramatic fight for survival.
