THE LOWDOWN

REAL BETIS

This week, Real Betis announced the signing of former Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, highlighting their general financial restrictions, which have held them back in really challenging for a place in the top four and UEFA Champions League qualification this season. Los Verdiblancos have managed just three victories in their opening ten matches.

Under the management of Manuel Pellegrini, they come into this on the back of a 1-0 win away to Cypriot First Division side, Aris Limassol, in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League. They are now unbeaten in their last seven matches across all competitions since a defeat to Rangers at Ibrox in mid-September.

OSASUNA

Last season, Osasuna reached the final of the Copa del Rey and also finished seventh in the table, earning UEFA Europa Conference League qualification. They were knocked out in that competition in the playoff round, though, by Belgian Jupiler Pro League side, Club Brugge, towards the end of August.

Jago Arrasate’s Pamplona-based outfit have started the 2023/24 La Liga campaign slowly, this time around, but they have moved into the middle-of-the-table of late. The visitors’ most recent outing was a comfortable and impressive 2-0 defeat of struggling Granada, who gained promotion from the top-flight last season.

THE TEAM NEWS

REAL BETIS

Manuel Pellegrini will be without the likes of Marc Bartra and Youssouf Sabaly, as well as forward Nabil Fekir for this weekend’s visit of Osasuna.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Bravo; Bellerin, Pezzella, Abner, Miranda; Guardado, Roca; Diao, Isco, Rodri; Iglesias

UNAVAILABLE: Riad (Injured), Altimira (Injured), Cruz (Injured), Bartra (Injured), Sabaly (Injured), Fekir (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

OSASUNA

They are without a couple of injured players for this weekend with Juan Cruz and Jose Manuel Arnaiz, as well as Unai Garcia, unavailable.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Herrera; Areso, Catena, David Garcia, Pena; Moncayola, Lucas Torro, Oroz; Avila, Budimir, Gomez

UNAVAILABLE: Cruz (Injured), Arnaiz (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Garcia (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

These two sides finished in the top seven of La Liga last season and earned European qualification. They are, once again, two evenly matched sides with the two teams separated by just a point in the table and a couple of places. Betis’ form, after a slow start, has been steadily improving, but so has Osasuna’s. Given that, as well as their general record and reputation last season, both teams scoring would seem a good bet for this one.
