THE LOWDOWN

REAL BETIS

Despite the size of their club and support, Real Betis are financially weak and, for want of a better expression, reliant on ‘wheeling and dealing’ in the transfer window with the likes of Hector Bellerin, Isco and Sokratis Papastathapoulos al being brought in on free transfers. Despite that, they maintain themselves as a top six regular – or at least challenger.

The home team come into this on the back of a continuation of their improved run of form as they defeated Osasuna by two goals to one last weekend before thrashing Hernan Cortes 12-1 in the first round of the Copa del Rey in midweek. They are now unbeaten in their last nine matches across all competitions.

MALLORCA

After gaining promotion to La Liga in 2021, Real Mallorca needed the late season appointment of Javier Aguirre to eventually be guided to safety. The Balearic Islanders finished firmly in the middle-of-the-table last season before an interesting summer transfer window in which they lost Lee Kang-in but did sign the likes of Sergi Darder.

Real Mallorca begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just outside of the bottom three and the relegation places. They have managed just one win in their opening 11 matches with six draws, highlighting a failure to quite match up their new attacking formula so far this season. They were held to a goalless draw at home to Getafe last weekend.

THE TEAM NEWS

REAL BETIS

Manuel Pellegrini will be without three key players throughout the spine of his team for this one with Marc Bartra, Nabil Fekir and Borja Iglesias all unavailable.

UNAVAILABLE: Iglesias (Injured), Bartra (Injured), Fekir (Injured)

MALLORCA

Real Mallorca have one missing player for their trip to Andalusia as summer signing Sergi Darder remains the only injury absentee for this one.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Rajkovic; Gonzalez, Valjent, Nastasic, J.Costa; Sanchez, Mascarell, S.Costa, Rodriguez; Abdon, Muriqi

UNAVAILABLE: Darder (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Manuel Pellegrini is known for being a generally attacking manager and Betis’ 12-1 win in midweek would be a sign of that. However, their recent turn around in form has been down to a bit of a more pragmatic style whereby they have limited the opposition to few chances. They now host a Mallorca side that fail to create many chances on a good day, regardless of the tightness and strictness of their opposition. Betis are favourites, especially with their home advantage, but it is unlikely to be a thriller.

BETTING TIP: REAL BETIS TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
