Coached by Francisco, Rayo were expected to struggle this season after a turbulent summer but they started quite well but we are now getting to a point where their current league position in mid-table is quite flattering to them and they are beginning to slide, slipping into the bottom-half after the weekend.
The home team have managed just four wins in their 17 matches so far this season, let down by eight draws – only Real Betis have drawn more often than them. They come into this one on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Osasuna at the weekend, which means they have now scored just two goals in their last six matches.
VALENCIA
It seemed inevitable that Valencia would be another La Liga relegation battle this season after avoiding the drop on the final day last year. However, under the management of Ruben Baraja, they have found a way to grind out enough victories whereby it appears a mid-table finish seems most likely instead.
They come into this one on the back of a fairly long winless run of form. They earned a creditable point against an underperforming Barcelona side via Hugo Guillamon’s second-half equaliser at Mestalla at the weekend but that draw does mean they are now winless in their last five La Liga matches.

THE PREDICTION
This is a bit of a weird match-up because, on paper, both teams have overperformed their pre-season expectations – and yet neither set of supporters will be overly pleased with how they are going at the moment. Rayo’s terrible form has stretched since a bright start to the campaign, whilst Valencia did well to bloody the nose of Barcelona last weekend but are also struggling to get over the line. A low-scoring affair between two evenly matched sides trending in a similar direction would appear quite likely.
