THE LOWDOWN
RAYO VALLECANO
Rayo Vallecano were expecting a relegation battle this season after a summer of upheaval but the first-half of the campaign was as steady as can possibly be with Francisco’s capital city based club even flirting with a potential top seven finish and possible UEFA Europa Conference League qualification.
However, their form since a bright start to the season has perhaps gone overlooked by many with a congested La Liga mid-table allowing them to sit fairly comfortably without falling away. Rayo earned a much-needed victory over eight-man Getafe to kick off 2024 but that followed on from a run of just one win in their previous 13 Liga games.
LAS PALMAS
Following promotion back to the top-flight last season, Las Palmas have enjoyed a very impressive 2023/24 La Liga campaign as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the top-half of the table. ‘The Brazilians of Spanish football’, coached by former Barcelona youth coach Garcia Pimienta, are playing a controlling, possession-based style of football.
That style of football, albeit progressive, can often produce fairly limited and stifled attacking patterns of play but the Canary Islanders come into this one on the back of a 3-0 demolition of Villarreal in their most recent outing, last weekend as they sit just a couple of places outside of the top seven and the European spots.
THE TEAM NEWS
RAYO VALLECANO
Rayo Vallecano have a couple of key absentees for this weekend’s visit of Las Palmas as both Pathe Ciss and Bebe are away on international duty.
PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Dimitrievski; Balliu, Aridane, Lejeune, Espino; Palazon, Lopez, Valentin, de Frutos; Camello, Perez
UNAVAILABLE: Ciss (International duty), Bebe (International duty), Kike Perez (Suspended)
QUESTIONABLE:
LAS PALMAS
Daley Sinkgraven remains a doubt for this weekend with illness, whilst Fabio Gonzalez is out injured and Julian Araujo is suspended for this weekend.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Valles; Suarez, Herzog, Marmol, S.Cardona; Munoz, Perrone, Rodriguez; Munir, Sandro, Moleiro
UNAVAILABLE: Araujo (Suspended), Gonzalez (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Sinkgraven (Illness)
THE PREDICTION
At the start of the season, it appeared as though these two sides would very much be involved in La Liga’s relegation battle but they both sit firmly ensconced in the middle-of-the-table. However, as the season has developed, the home team have got progressively worse and a little fortunate, whilst Garcia Pimienta’s Las Palmas continue to grow and continue the fight for European qualification. A low-scoring encounter is to be expected but backing the Canarians also looks a good bet, too.
