THE LOWDOWN

MALLORCA

Real Mallorca have defied expectations in the two seasons since gaining promotion to the Spanish top-flight in 2021. The Balearic Islanders have built in each campaign to achieve a mid-table finish last year, under Javier Aguirre, but are searching in something of a mini rebuild after the sale of Lee Kang-in to Paris Saint-Germain over the summer.

They have managed just one win in their opening eight matches so far this season but performances have improved as the campaign has gone on. Their last two matches have been draws but the first came against Barcelona when they went ahead twice in the match before another 2-2 draw with Rayo Vallecano, in which they conceded 102nd minute equaliser to a Radamel Falcao penalty.

VALENCIA

Valencia are a giant of Spanish football and have a claim to being the third biggest club in the country. They, though, have been run poorly in recent years and supporter protests continue against owner Peter Lim. They avoided relegation on the final day of the season last year but are expected to endure another long and sustained battle against the drop.

Ruben Baraja, who masterminded their narrow escape, remains in charge as the Valencians began an impressively with back-to-back victories against Sevilla and Las Palmas. They have, though, won just one in their next six matches, albeit an impressive 3-0 hammering of Atletico Madrid. They come into this on the back of a 3-0 loss in Andalusia against Real Betis.

THE TEAM NEWS

MALLORCA

Javier Aguirre has a couple of key defensive issues with Antonio Raillo out injured, whilst Pablo Maffeo remains suspended for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Rajkovic; Gonzalez, Valjent, Nastasic, J.Costa; Sanchez, S.Costa, Darder, Rodriguez; Abdon, Muriqi

UNAVAILABLE: Maffeo (Suspended), Raillo (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

VALENCIA

Ruben Baraja is missing several players this weekend with the biggest and most notable absentees being defensive duo Jose Luis Gaya and Dimitri Foulquier.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Mamardashvili; Mosquera, Diakhaby, Gabriel, Ozkacar; Pepelu, Guerra; Perez, Almeida, Gozalbez; Yaremchuk

UNAVAILABLE: Gaya (Injured), Foulquier (Injured), Canos (Injured), Mari (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Vazquez (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This is expected to be a bit of a six-pointer with both sides hoping to simply avoid relegation this season. That may be a little below par for both teams; for Mallorca in terms of their investment over the summer and for Valencia in terms of their club size and recruitment. Valencia started well but have now drifted a little, whilst Mallorca have suffered one defeat in five matches so, especially with their home advantage, a double chance bet in favour of the islanders looks the way to go for this one.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – MARSEILLE TO WIN OR DRAW
