THE LOWDOWN

MALLORCA

Still coached by Mexican boss Javier Aguirre, Real Mallorca have been a little underwhelming this season with the Balearic Islanders still just about involved in La Liga’s relegation battle but they should stay safe and they are involved in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey. They shared a goalless draw with Real Sociedad in the first-leg in midweek.

That was typically defensive and dogged of a Mallorca side coached by Aguirre – only one team has scored fewer than the 19 that they have managed in La Liga so far this season in 23 matches. They were thrashed 4-0 by Athletic Club last weekend and are now winless in their last five games in the league.

RAYO VALLECANO

After a summer of losing key players and their manager, it was the expectation that Rayo Vallecano would spend this season in a La Liga relegation battle but that had appeared to be a fear that would not be realised after a fairly bright start but the Madrid-based club now begin the weekend sitting in the bottom-half and slipping closer to that bottom three.

Francisco remains in charge but is coming under increasing pressure, especially after their 2-1 defeat at home to Sevilla on Monday evening in a game in which Youssef En-Nesyri scored a brace for the opposition. That means they have now managed just one victory in their last 12 matches in La Liga in a run that stretches back to mid-October.

QUESTIONABLE:

RAYO VALLECANO

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Dimitrievski; Balliu, Aridane, Lejeune, Espino; Palazon, Lopez, Valentin, Chavarria; Camello, Garcia

THE PREDICTION

Real Mallorca do have the added distraction of Copa del Rey football but the pressure really is on them in La Liga at the moment. They did enjoy an up-turn in form before the New Year but they have drifted a fair bit since then. They face a Rayo Vallecano side that have struggled for any sort of form since the early stages of the campaign and Francisco is under major pressure with a low-scoring home win would appear a good bet for this one.

TIP: MALLORCA TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
