THE LOWDOWN

LAS PALMAS

Former Barcelona youth coach Garcia Pimienta led Las Palmas to automatic promotion from the second-tier last season, finishing as runners’ up to Granada. Stereotyped as ‘the Brazilians of Spanish football’, the Canary Islanders do seek to play a front foot and proactive style but that has not come to fruition in the early stages of this season.

After seven matches of the 2023/24 La Liga campaign, Las Palmas are the lowest scorers in the division having managed, astonishingly, just two goals so far. They come into this on the back of improved performances and results in the last week. Firstly defeating the aforementioned Granada by a goal to nil before a 2-0 loss at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid.

CELTA VIGO

Over the summer, Celta Vigo lost key man Gabri Veiga to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli as their attempts to steady what has been a rocky ship in recent seasons started badly. They appointed Rafa Benitez in pre-season with the idea that the former Liverpool and Real Madrid manager would help the Galicians to avoid yet another relegation battle.

The visitors come into this on the back of a very frustrating 1-1 draw at home to Alaves in midweek, leading until the 73rd minute, five minutes after being reduced to ten men. That irritating result followed a 3-2 defeat in Catalonia away to reigning champions Barcelona last weekend, in a game in which they had led by two goals to nil with less than ten minutes to go.

THE TEAM NEWS

THE PREDICTION

These are two sides level on points down at the wrong end of La Liga with both teams anticipating an arduous battle against the drop. Las Palmas would have anticipated that from the start but will be concerned by their lack of cutting edge in attack. Celta Vigo, on the other hand, have genuinely played well and probably would be fair to believe they deserve more than the five points they currently have. Regardless of whether Celta can get over their own hump, a low-scoring encounter is expected, given that the two teams have managed to score just nine goals between them.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
