THE LOWDOWN

GRANADA

Following promotion last season it was always expected to be a struggle for Granada but the home team have underperformed even those already low expectations. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting firmly in the bottom three and the relegation places, five points adrift of 17th place – 17th placed being their upcoming opponents, Sevilla.

Paco Lopez was sacked last month and replaced by Alexander Medina but performances have not improved and they have potentially actually gone backwards as they languish down towards the bottom. They come into this one on the back of a slender 1-0 defeat to fellow strugglers Celta Vigo at the weekend.

SEVILLA

At the time of writing, Diego Alonso remains in charge of Sevilla but the fact we are so close to a natural break in the football with Spain’s short winter break is most likely what is keeping the former Inter Miami boss in the dugout at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. He remains winless in La Liga and they are once again in a relegation battle this season.

Sevilla were thumped by three goals to nil at home last weekend with an in-form Getafe dispatching of them. That means they have managed just four victories in 25 matches across all competitions so far this season with two wins in the Copa del Rey against lower league opposition and two wins in the league against rock-bottom and winless Almeria as well as Las Palmas.

THE TEAM NEWS

SEVILLA

Sevilla have plenty of injury issues for this midweek’s Andalusian derby with the likes of Joan Jordan, Fernando, Dodi Lukebakio and Jesus Navas among those on the sidelines.

PREDICTED XI (5-3-2): Dmitrovic; Sanchez, Gudelj, Ramos, Salas, Pedrosa; Sow, Soumare, Rakitic; Ocampos, En-Nesyri

UNAVAILABLE: Joan Jordan (Injured), Lukebakio (Injured), Fernando (Injured), Acuna (Injured), Kouassi (Injured), Mariano Diaz (Injured), Jesus Navas (Injured), Bade (Injured), Nyland (Injured), Pastor (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Lamela (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This Andalusian derby features two teams that are right in the thick of La Liga’s relegation battle. Granada will have always earmarked Sevilla at home as a game to get excited for but they will also see this as a major opportunity to close the gap on the teams that are in a safe position. Sevilla have struggled to beat pretty much anyone this season so even if they can get over the line in this one, it won’t be at all convincing. Both teams have scored over a goal per game this season and a game in which both are desperate for a win could produce quite an entertaining spectacle.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
