THE LOWDOWN

GIRONA

It has been a magnificent campaign for Girona and they can confirm UEFA Champions League qualification as soon as the weekend. The Catalans begin the match day sitting 13 points clear of fifth with five games to go as they look to secure a top four spot, which had been in jeopardy about a month or so ago after a dip in form which has soon been arrested by Michel.

The hosts, as mentioned, have arrested that slide and they come into this one on the back of a 2-0 defeat of Las Palmas in their most recent outing in the Canary Islands last weekend with goals from David Lopez and then a penalty from Artem Dovbyk. That was their third victory in their last four games in La Liga.

BARCELONA

Following Barcelona’s 5-3 defeat at home to Villarreal in January, Xavi Hernandez announced he would be departing the club as manager at the end of this season. Since then, though, the Blaugrana majorly improved in both performances and results but back-to-back defeats recently ended any hope of salvaging their campaign.

They were beaten 4-1 by Paris Saint-Germain in Barcelona, being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League at the quarter-final stage by six goals to four on aggregate. They followed that up by again losing from a winning position against Clasico rivals Real Madrid at the Bernabeu with a last minute winner coming from Jude Bellingham.

THE PREDICTION

The reverse fixture of this Catalan derby back in the first-half of the season saw Girona go to the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona and win by four goals to two. That was a classic example of Girona’s entertaining form with their 33 matches consisting of 109 goals, whilst Barcelona’s issue in the defence of their title is being a lot looser at the back with their 33 games consisting of 107. Another entertaining derby is to be expected with very little to play for for either side for the rest of this campaign.

TIP: OVER 2.5 GOALS
