THE LOWDOWN

CELTA VIGO

Last season, Celta Vigo narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the season after going through two managers. Eduardo Coudet struggled for the first part of the season before Carlos Carvalhal ended up badly struggling, despite a strong start to his reign initially. The Galicians turned to Rafa Benitez in the summer.

Performances have been far better than results for Celta so far this season and they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom three and the relegation places. The hosts have managed just one win in their opening 11 matches, scoring fewer than a goal per game and they have collected just a point from their last four Liga matches.

SEVILLA

Sevilla were in a relegation battle for much of last season but the March international break appointment of Jose Luis Mendilibar began a run of comfortably surviving and then going on to win the UEFA Europa League, too. The Andalusians, though, have already had to sack Mendilibar after a slow start to the campaign.

Under the management of former Uruguay boss Diego Alonso, the visitors come into this on the back of a much-needed 3-0 hammering of Quintanar in the first round of the Copa del Rey. That was just their third victory in 15 matches across all competitions so far this season as they once again appear set or a relegation battle.

THE TEAM NEWS

CELTA VIGO

Rafa Benitez has a few key injury issues, most notably at left-back, with Joseph Aidoo unavailable and Mihailo Ristic a doubt for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Guaita; Vazquez, Starfelt, Nunez, Sanchez; de la Torre, Tapia, Dotor, Bamba; Aspas, Strand Larsen

UNAVAILABLE: Aidoo (Injured), Perez (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Ristic (Injured)

SEVILLA

Sevilla have several injury concerns as Marcao is definitely unavailable whilst the likes of Suso, Jesus Navas and Sergio Ramos are all doubtful.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Nyland; Sanchez, Gudelj, Ramos, Acuna; Suso, Soumare, Rakitic; Lukebakio, Diaz, Ocampos

UNAVAILABLE: Marcao (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Navas (Injured), Suso (Injured), Ramos (Injured), Pastor (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Rafa Benitez is the arch-pragmatist so he will know and set his Celta side up to be in a position to take advantage of games such as these ones against teams that are also underperforming and struggling. However, much like a typical Benitez side, there is a lack of cutting edge and incision in attack. Diego Alonso is expected to implement a more easy on the eye style with Sevilla but their own lack of efficiency and effectiveness in forward areas has left a lot to be desire. These are two struggling teams lacking fluency and it may be a tough watch for the neutral as a result.
