THE LOWDOWN

ATLETICO MADRID

Diego Simeone has slightly tweaked and evolved the Atletico Madrid style of football but their performances and results have been fairly inconsistent in the calendar year of 2024. Los Rojiblancos begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the top four but they have suffered three defeats with a draw in their last nine matches across all competitions.

They come into this on the back of defeating Sevilla by a goal to nil at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey. That victory, with the winning goal coming from Memphis Depay, will be a major boost as they become the overwhelming favourites to with the Copa del Rey as the top three, Girona, Real Madrid and Barcelona, all already knocked out.

VALENCIA

Valencia are overperforming their pre-season expectations, which were a relegation battle. Under the management of Ruben Baraja, the Valencians begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting tucked inside the top seven and the European spots, just three points behind Real Sociedad in the top six.

They come into this one on the back of a 1-0 defeat of high-flying Athletic Club in their most recent outing, last weekend. That was Valencia’s fourth successive victory in La Liga. They have remained reactive and set up to punish teams, having managed to score just 27 goals in 21 games but only five teams have conceded fewer than them so far this season.

THE TEAM NEWS

ATLETICO MADRID

Diego Simeone is without a couple of key first-teamers for this weekend with both Cesar Azpilicueta and Thomas Lemar unavailable for the visit of Valencia.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Oblak; Savic, Witsel, Hermoso; Molina, Llorente, Barrios, Saul, Riquelme; Morata, Griezmann

UNAVAILABLE: Azpilicueta (Injured), Lemar (Injured), Vitolo (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

VALENCIA

Sergi Canos is missing from this one due to injury, whilst both Mouctar Diakhaby and Selim Amallah are unavailable due to Africa Cup of Nations involvement.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Mamardashvili; Foulquier, Mosquera, Gabriel, Gaya; Perez, Guillamon, Pepelu, Lopez; Duro, Yaremchuk

UNAVAILABLE: Amallah (International duty), Diakhaby (International duty), Canos (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Almeida (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Atletico Madrid have been a little underwhelming in the last month or so in La Liga but they have also put in some extremely impressive performances. Their 20 matches in Spain’s top-flight has consisted of 63 goals. They now face a Valencia side that have been in excellent form so the visitors will head to the capital city on the front foot and with a bit of confidence so another high-scoring affair would appear a good bet for this one.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
