THE LOWDOWN
ATLETICO MADRID
Since the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Atletico Madrid have been much-improved under the management of Diego Simeone. Los Rojiblancos have tweaked their style of football to be seemingly more attacking and more intent on going forward. They will be expecting to challenge for a third Spanish league title during Simeone’s reign.
They come into this on the back of a 1-1 draw with Lazio in the opening match of their UEFA Champions League group stage outing, missing out on three points with goalkeeper Ivan Provedel scoring a 95th minute equaliser. That followed a shock 3-0 hammering at the hands of Valencia in their most recent Liga outing, last weekend.
REAL MADRID
After the signing of their latest ‘galactico’, Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid are expected to challenge for the UEFA Champions League and La Liga double this season. They remain in a bit of flux with uncertainty over Carlo Ancelotti’s future, with Brazil still linked, and the loss of captain Karim Benzema to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad.
They have enjoyed six successive wins at the start of this campaign but all six victories have been unconvincing. They have beaten Athletic Club, Almeria, Celta, Getafe and Real Sociedad in the league before another last gasp win, with a winner by Bellingham, at home to Union Berlin in their opening UEFA Champions League group stage match in midweek.

THE PREDICTION
The derby of Madrid is always a fascinating encounter, albeit one that has been majorly one-sided in its long history. Atletico Madrid have been much-improved but will come into this one on the back of two poor performances and they are also missing some key and important players for this one. Real Madrid, on the other hand, have also been playing in a fairly unconvincing fashion and are missing key players of their own. Given that, a low-scoring encounter is expected on Sunday evening.
