THE LOWDOWN

ATLETICO MADRID

After the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Atletico Madrid turned their form around with some impressive and improved performances and style of play. Los Rojiblancos were seemingly into the final few months of the Diego Simeone reign but, instead, they have begun a new era and are back in the Spanish title race.

In their opening nine matches of the 2023/24 La Liga campaign, they have managed seven victories with a draw and just one anomalous defeat where they were hammered by Valencia. They rescued a point against Celtic in a 2-2 draw in the UEFA Champions League in midweek, making it one defeat in 12 matches so far this season.

ALAVES

Last season, Alaves gained promotion back to the top-flight of Spanish via the playoffs, under the management of Luis Garcia Plata. They are expected to struggle throughout the campaign and will be reliant on home advantage at Mendizarrozza throughout the campaign. The Basque club play a rough and rugged style of football.

They come into this on the back of a 1-1 draw away to Villarreal in their most recent outing, last weekend. They languish low down the table and just outside of the bottom three and the relegation places. They have managed just two wins in ten matches and no team has scored fewer than the eight goals that they have managed.

THE TEAM NEWS

ATLETICO MADRID

Injuries have ravaged the Atletico Madrid squad throughout the season and they will continue to be without the likes of Samuel Lino, Thomas Lemar and Memphis Depay.

ALAVES

After joining on loan from Atletico in the summer, ut the only injury issue for Alaves is that of Giuliano Simeone after his leg break in pre-season against Burgos.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Sivera; Gorosabel, Abqar, Sedlar, Duarte; Blanco, Guevara; Sola, Guridi, Rioja; Samu

UNAVAILABLE: Simeone (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

In recent seasons, Atletico Madrid were not a team you would back to hammer and take apart a side as rough and determined as Alaves. The visitors have struggled, though, very badly at adapting to life back in the top-flight. The home team will come into this with a little bit of tiredness as their small squad is being stretched by a plethora of injuries but, especially with home advantage, should win this one quite comfortably.

BETTING TIP: ATLETICO MADRID TO WIN -1 HANDICAP
