THE LOWDOWN

ATHLETIC BILBAO

Under the management of Ernesto Valverde, Athletic Club are enjoying an impressive campaign as they challenge for a top four spot and potential UEFA Champions League qualification. The Basque club begin the 18th match day of the 2023/24 La Liga campaign sitting fifth and just two points behind Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid are the team that they defeated in their most recent outing as Gorka Guruzeta and Nico Williams scored the goals in their 2-0 victory over Los Rojiblancos at San Mames on Saturday afternoon. They have been entertaining to watch this season, too, with a combined total of 52 goals coming in their 17 matches.

LAS PALMAS

Following promotion from the second-tier last season, Las Palmas have enjoyed a more respectable ride in the top-flight of Spanish football in these opening few months. The Canary Islanders begin the 18th match day of the 2023/24 campaign sitting just outside of the top seven and the European qualification spots.

Under the management of former Barcelona youth coach Garcia Pimienta, Las Palmas play a controlling and easy on the eye but generally fairly dull style of football. The visitors come into this one on the back of a frustrating continuation of their goalscoring woes with a 1-1 draw against Cadiz. They have scored just 15 goals in 17 matches so far this season.

QUESTIONABLE:

THE PREDICTION

The home team have been magnificent this season and arguably put in the performance of any team in La Liga so far as they defeated Atletico Madrid the other day. They have been prone to the occasional slip up against the likes of Valencia at San Mames but as Las Palmas come to town, frustrated by a lack of efficiency in the final third, Athletic will be more than confident of earning another victory here.

TIP: ATHLETIC BILBAO TO WIN
