THE LOWDOWN
ATHLETIC BILBAO
With their ‘cantera’ policy, Athletic are restricted in the transfer market with their incomings. However, the Basque club’s proud record of never being relegated remains and is not actually their over goals and expectations are actually a lot higher and more ambitious than just that as they, once again, challenge for European qualification.
The hosts come into this on the back of a thrilling 3-2 win away to Villarreal in their most recent outing, last weekend, in La Liga. They went 3-0 up in half an hour before conceding two goals late on. Since losing to Real Madrid on the opening day of the season, they have managed six victories and three draws in 11 matches.
CELTA VIGO
Both Eduardo Coudet and Carlos Carvalhal had to battle against relegation last season so the appointment of Rafa Benitez was expected to bring an improvement; however, the Galicians have remained a really poor team in Spain’s top-flight and they begin the weekend sitting in the bottom three and the relegation places.
They have managed just one victory in their opening 12 matches but Benitez remains in charge, despite mounting pressure. That pressure grew as they conceded a late equaliser to Sevilla last week, preventing a second victory of the campaign. That draw means they are winless in their last eight matches in La Liga.
THE TEAM NEWS
ATHLETIC BILBAO
Athletic Club have a few injury concerns for this one with Yuri Berchiche a doubt and key men such as Raul Garcia, Ander Herrera and Yeray Alvarez all missing.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Simon; de Marcos, Vivian, Paredes, Lekue; Vesga, Ruiz de Galarreta; I.Williams, Sancet, N.Williams; Guruzeta
UNAVAILABLE: Raul Garcia (Injured), Herrera (Injured), Yeray (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Berchiche (Injured)
CELTA VIGO
Celta Vigo are missing midfielder Renato Tapia, due to suspension, as well as the injured Joseph Aidoo and Mihailo Ristic remains a doubt for this weekend.
PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Guaita; Vazquez, Starfelt, Nunez, Sanchez; Mingueza, Beltran, Sotelo, Bamba; Aspas, Strand Larsen
UNAVAILABLE: Tapia (Suspended), Aidoo (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Ristic (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
These are two northern clubs that are experiencing very different starts to the season with Athletic Club competing for a top four spot and Celta in a battle down at the very bottom end of the table. The home team have suffered just one defeat in their last four matches as Ernesto Valverde’s side continue a gradual improvement upon recent seasons. Celta have been underwhelming and they are really struggling so an Athletic victory, especially with their home advantage, appears likely for this one.
