THE LOWDOWN

VITORIA GUIMARAES

In the summer of 2022, Vitoria had to deal with the loss of their manager, Pepa, to Al Tai and now Cruzeiro, as well as key players such as Ricardo Quaresma, Andre Almeida, Oscar Estupinan, Rochinha and Marcus Edwards. After a slow start, though, they became very impressive and eventually finished in the top six and earned UEFA Europa Conference League qualification.

The Guimaraes-based club, though, have suffered another early exit from European competition but in the league they have begun with, surprisingly, back-to-back victories. They edged past ten-man newly-promoted Estrela da Amadora before coming from behind to defeat Gil Vicente by two goals to one in their most recent outing, last weekend.

VIZELA

Portuguese Primeira Liga football is, bluntly, often the dullest and most tedious league in European football with a focus on reactive and defensive tactics, as well as a propensity to delve into the ‘dark arts’. Vizela, though, have started this season very differently with nine goals coming in their opening two matches of the 2023/24 campaign.

Vizela finished in mid-table last season but will be one of the sides concerned about sliding down towards the bottom three. Their manager from last year, Alvaro Pacheco, has moved on to Estoril and been replaced by Pablo Villar. Villar has overseen Vizela being two goals down against Sporting CP, fought back to 2-2 before eventually losing in second-half stoppage-time and then they shared a 2-2 draw with Arouca in another entertaining clash last weekend.

THE TEAM NEWS

VITORIA GUIMARAES

Under the management of Moreno, Vitoria will be pleased with their start to the season and with no injuries or suspensions, they should have an unchanged eleven for this weekend’s encounter.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Bruno Varela; Fernandes, M.Silva, Villanueva; Gaspar, T.Silva, Handel, D.Silva, Freitas; A.Silva, J.Silva

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE:

VIZELA

Vitoria are likely to start five players with Silva as their surname, whilst Vizela will be missing their ‘Silva’ (Tomas) due to a suspension. Other than that, they should remain unchanged.

PREDICTED XI (4-1-4-1): Buntic; Escoval, Wilson, Anderson, Pereira; Bustamente; Kiko, Moreira, Samu, Lacava; Essende

UNAVAILABLE: Silva (Suspended)

THE PREDICTION

Vitoria were eliminated from the UEFA Europa Conference League in the third qualifying round but they have performed well at the start of the 2023/24 Primeira Liga campaign. They come into this on the back of back-to-back victories and will be aiming for another top six finish. Whilst Vizela have been entertaining in their two matches against stiff opposition, this is a tough test travelling to Guimaraes and backing Vitoria, especially with their home advantage, looks the way to go for this one.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – VITORIA TO WIN OR DRAW
