THE LOWDOWN
SPORTING BRAGA
After the departure of Carlos Carvalhal, not many would have thought that Braga, who have PSG’s owners QSI as a major shareholder, to improve but they did so under the management of Artur Jorge. They broke up ‘Os Tres Grandes’ (‘The Big Three’) in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for this season.
After victories against Backa Topola and Panathinaikos, they reached the group stages of the UEFA Champions League and come into this on the back of an impressive performance but a 2-1 loss at home to Napoli in the opening match in midweek. They have started the 2023/24 Primeira Liga campaign with two wins, a draw and two defeats with ten goals scored and ten conceded.
BOAVISTA
Only two teams outside of ‘Os Tres Grandes’ (The Big Three of Benfica, Porto and Sporting CP) have ever won the Portuguese Primeira Liga. Boavista were the most recent of those two winners, alongside Belenenses, when they won the title at the turn of the century. Edging their way into the European spots would be viewed as successful for them this season.
They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting at the very top-of-the-table, though, after a very impressive start to the campaign. They began by defeating Benfica by three goals to two on the opening day of the season with two second-half stoppage-time goals. Since then they have enjoyed three more wins and a draw to sit at the top.

THE PREDICTION
These are two teams that will be very pleased with their respective starts to the season. The home team will be slightly less happy after the QSI investment as mentioned but they will still be confident they are in a position to earn European qualification, once again. Boavista aren’t and weren’t expected to have started as well as they have done so will be expecting to fall away slightly but they have started very well and will go on the attack at Braga. An entertaining game should occur.
