THE LOWDOWN

LIVERPOOL

A couple of seasons ago, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool played in every single match that was available for them to play in as they won both the FA Cup and EFL Cup, whilst finishing as runners’ up in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. The Reds, despite still widely being considered as in the middle of a rebuild, could be repeating that again this season.

Their impressive 2-0 defeat of Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon, whereby they ruthlessly punished the hosts’ lack of attacking efficiency, means they head into this cup tie knowing an EFL Cup might just be the start of an impressive trophy haul this season as they eye up the league title as well as the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League.

FULHAM

Under the management of Marco Silva, Fulham have enjoyed some cup runs. The Cottagers reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last season and really should have got past Manchester United at Old Trafford if it wasn’t for a mini implosion. This time around, they have hit the final four of the EFL Cup and, once again, can prioritise this competition as they sit comfortable in mid-table.

They defeated Arsenal by two goals to one in a London derby on New Year’s Eve and followed that up by edging past Rotherham United by a goal to nil on Friday evening in the third round of this season’s FA Cup. They tested Liverpool a lot last month in a league game, suffering an entertaining 4-3 defeat at Anfield in a game in which they took the lead with less than ten minutes to go.

THE TEAM NEWS

LIVERPOOL

Liverpool will continue to be without key man Mohamed Salah as he is away with the Egyptian national team at the Africa Cup of Nations and they will also be without Wataru Endo, once again, as he takes part in the AFC Asian Cup with Japan.

Dominik Szoboszlai remains unavailable for this one due to injury after missing the 2-0 defeat of Arsenal at the weekend. He, as well as Joel Matip, Stefan Bajcetic, Andrew Robertson, Thiago Alcantara and Kostas Tsimikas remain unavailable due to injury with Virgil van Dijk a doubt. Trent Alexander-Arnold has pulled out late on with a knee issue.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Bradley, Konate, Quansah, Gomez; Elliott, Gravenberch, Jones; Gakpo, Nunez, Jota

UNAVAILABLE: Thiago (Injured), Tsimikas (Injured), Alexander-Arnold (Injured), Bajcetic (Injured), Robertson (Injured), Matip (Injured), Szoboszlai (Injured), Salah (International duty), Endo (International duty)

QUESTIONABLE: Van Dijk (Illness)

FULHAM

Marco Silva has said Tim Ream is getting closer to being a part of a match day squad but Adama Traore will remain unavailable. He didn’t comment on if he would be rotating heavily for this week but did describe the possibility as a ‘very good sign for us, it means we are going in the right direction.’

The only other availability concerns for Silva and Fulham are to do with international callups. Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey are both with the Nigerian squad at the Africa Cup of Nations, whilst Fode Ballo-Toure is also at the tournament with Senegal.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Castagne, Adarabioyo, Diop, Robinson; Palhinha, Cairney; Decordova-Reid, Pereira, Willian; Jimenez

UNAVAILABLE: Traore (Injured), Ballo-Toure (International duty), Bassey (International duty), Iwobi (International duty)

QUESTIONABLE: Ream (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This one has the potential to be a bit of a thriller on Wednesday evening. As mentioned, Fulham went to Anfield and put in a strong attacking performance, notching three times in defeat. The Cottagers will seek to take advantage of a potentially distracted and fatigued Liverpool side. Liverpool, on the other hand, are finding their groove of ‘mentality monsters’ again and are unlikely to allow many teams to leave their home ground without suffering a fair bit. A high-scoring first-leg could well be in store.

TIP: OVER 2.5 GOALS
