THE LOWDOWN

UDINESE

For much of last season and the start of this, Udinese have been genuinely atrocious with pressure growing on Pozzo ownership model. They finally decided to swap managers from Andrea Sottil back to Gabriele Cioffi recently and that has seen a minor improvement. They come into this on the back of a famous 1-0 win at San Siro against AC Milan.

That much-needed victory was their first of the 2023/24 Serie A campaign and also followed on from a surprising and even more disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Cagliari in the Coppa Italia. They have remained relatively difficult to beat so far this season, though, with seven draws in their opening 11 games.

ATALANTA

Under the management of Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta are undergoing another rejuvenation and evolution of their personnel and general playing style. The Bergamasci, though, have still been able to keep picking up results but the inconsistency is beginning to irritate a few as they sit outside of the top four.

The visitors come into this one on the back of a slender but necessary 1-0 win over Sturm Graz in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League in midweek. That victory does mean they have suffered just one loss in their last five matches across all competitions, albeit their one time relentless attacking football appears no more.

THE PREDICTION

Udinese had been winless all season and, genuinely and generally, one of the weakest sides in Serie A for over 12 months. Now the Friulians have a bit of hope and life after finally getting over the line with a victory. They face an Atalanta side that in the middle of their latest incarnation under Gian Piero Gasperini but are finding it hard to find much fluency, especially in attack. The Bergamasci are likely to be thwarted by some defensive resilience from the hosts and a fairly low-scoring encounter is to be expected in the north east.

BETTING TIP: UNDER 3.5 GOALS
