TORINO PREVIEW: BECOMING MORE EFFECTIVE

Last season, after playing quite a progressive but ineffective style of football under the management of Ivan Juric in which Torino managed a top-half finish with just 36 goals scored and 36 goals conceded, the Turin-based outfit moved on from the former Hellas Verona boss and replaced him with former Italy youth coach Paolo Vanoli.

Vanoli had led Venezia to the top-flight last season before moving to Piedmont and they started very well at San Siro against AC Milan last week, going 2-0 up via a Malick Thiaw own goal and Duvan Zapata before Alvaro Morata scored in the 89th minute and then Noah Okafor equalised deep into second-half stoppage-time.

ATALANTA PREVIEW: GLORY TO GASPERINI

After creating several different generations with Atalanta, they finally won their first trophy under the impressive and remarkable management of Gian Piero Gasperini last season as they hammered Bayer Leverkusen in the final of the UEFA Europa League in Dublin. They then frustrated Real Madrid for large parts in the UEFA Super Cup, too, before this season before losing by two goals to nil.

With plenty of off-field issues and movement in the transfer market and key absentees, the Bergamasci managed to put in an excellent performance down south in Apulia as they hammered Lecce by four goals to nil last weekend.

TORINO TEAM NEWS: RETURNING VLASIC

Croatia international midfielder Nikola Vlasic, who missed UEFA EURO 2024 due to injury, appears well suited to Paolo Vanoli’s system and he is edging towards a return.

Vanoli has no fresh injury concerns, though, so is likely to keep his starting eleven unchanged but Dutch defender Perr Schuurs is expected to be unavailable for some time yet. However, there is actually a question mark over Atalanta-bound right wing-back Raoul Bellanova.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Milinkovic-Savic; Vojvoda, Saul Coco, Masina; Dembele, Ricci, Linetty, Ilic, Lazaro; Tonny Sanabria, Duvan Zapata

UNAVAILABLE: Schuurs (Injured), Gineitis (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Vlasic (Injured)

ATALANTA TEAM NEWS: SO MANY ISSUES

Both Teun Koopmeiners and Ademola Lookman are refusing to be involved at Atalanta with the pair linked with moves away to Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain respectively.

Other key players from last season’s UEFA Europa League triumph, such as defender Giorgio Scalvini and striker Gianluca Scamacca, are both unavailable due to ACL injuries.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Musso; De Roon, Hien, Djimsiti; Zappacosta, Pasalic, Ederson, Ruggeri; Brescianini, De Ketelaere; Retegui

UNAVAILABLE: Scalvini (Injured), Toloi (Injured), Kolasinac (Injured), Scamacca (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Zaniolo (Injured)

TORINO VS ATALANTA PREDICTION

Torino’s issue under Ivan Juric was not that they didn’t try to play progressive football but more than the football often had very little end product but if Paolo Vanoli’s first game is anything to go by then that is going to change in Turin. Atalanta are rebuilding once again and Gasperini is doing it well once again with two new signings, Marco Brescianini and Mateo Retegui, both scoring braces on debut for the club last weekend. A high-scoring encounter seems likely here.

TORINO VS ATALANTA TIP: OVER 2.5 GOALS
