THE LOWDOWN

SASSUOLO

In 2021, after guiding Empoli to promotion to Serie A, Alessio Dionisi left the Florence-based club and moved on to Sassuolo. Dionisi always had a tough job replacing the now Brighton manager, Roberto De Zerbi, but he has not necessarily performed to a standard that was expected of him when he took charge.

They come into this on the back of a 2-0 loss at home to a struggling Lazio side in their most recent outing, last weekend, following the international break. They have managed just three victories in nine games so far this season but, remarkably, those three matches have come against Hellas Verona, Inter and Juventus.

BOLOGNA

Since the appointment of former PSG youth coach and Spezia manager, Thiago Motta, Bologna have been very impressive with an attacking and intricate style of football that is representative of the innovative tactical model that Motta has wanted to impose upon his sides. They lost Marko Arnautovic and Nicolas Dominguez in the summer but have remained strong.

They began the 2023/24 campaign with a 2-0 defeat at home to AC Milan but have managed three victories and five draws in their subsequent eight matches, meaning they are unbeaten in over two months. Their lack of wins means they sit outside of the top seven but have won two of their last three, including a 2-1 defeat of Frosinone.

THE TEAM NEWS

SASSUOLO

Sassuolo have several injury concerns with the likes of Agustin Alvarez, Mattia Viti, Pedro Obiang and Matheus Henrique all unavailable for the home team.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Consigli; Toljan, Tressoldi, Ferrari, Pedersen; Boloca, Racic; Berardi, Castillejo, Lauriente; Pinamonti

UNAVAILABLE: Henrique (Injured), Obiang (Injured), Viti (Injured), Alvarez (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

BOLOGNA

Bologna will be without an injured duo for this weekend’s game against Sassuolo as both Jhon Lucumi and Adama Soumaoro will be missing for their short trip.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Skorupski; De Silvestri, Beukema, Calafiori, Lykogiannis; Freuler, Aebischer; Orsolini, Ferguson, Saelemaekers; Zirkzee

UNAVAILABLE: Lucumi (Injured), Soumaoro (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

THE PREDICTION

Although these are two sides that appear evenly matched on paper in terms of their personnel and manager’s history, as well as finishing in mid-table last year and likely set for mid-table finishes this season; if you scratch just beneath the surface, there is something brewing with one and stagnating in the other. Sassuolo have performed in a consistently underwhelming fashion, whilst Bologna are simply one of the toughest teams to beat in Italy so a double chance bet in favour of the away team looks the way to go for this one.

BETTING TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – BOLOGNA TO WIN OR DRAW
