THE LOWDOWN

NAPOLI

Defending champions Napoli have really badly struggled in the defence of the Serie A title this season. The Neapolitans lost manager Luciano Spalletti and defender Kim Min-jae in the summer and that was a sign of things to come as president Aurelio Di Laurentiis appears intent on a systematic destruction of what was built last season.

Rudi Garcia was sacked during the November international break and now Walter Mazzarri is coming under intense pressure as they drift into the middle-of-the-table ahead of this match day. Napoli were thrashed 3-0 by Torino in their most recent outing, last weekend, and they have won just four matches in 14 games across all competitions.

SALERNITANA

Salernitana have suffered from poor form throughout this campaign as they begin the 20th match day of the 2023/24 Serie A campaign sitting rock-bottom in the table with just two victories in their 19 matches so far this season. The visitors’ performances have gradually improved of late but they appear destined for the drop even still.

Paulo Sousa was sacked earlier this season and Filippo Inzaghi’s appointment has been followed by a minor improvement but they remain the weakest team in the division. They have conceded 38 goals in their 19 matches so far this season and they come into this one on the back of a 2-1 defeat at home to Juventus, conceding a second-half stoppage-time winner in that.

THE TEAM NEWS

THE PREDICTION

Now, on paper, Napoli should be overwhelming favourites for this one and, on paper, they still have good players but the lack of any rhythm or happiness in their play, combined with their absentees and poor form, has them looking like a contender to genuinely slip into the bottom-half of the table. Napoli have failed to score in six of their last eight matches across all competitions so, up against rock-bottom Salernitana, a low-scoring game regardless of the match result, appears quite likely.
