THE LOWDOWN

NAPOLI

Defending champions Napoli have really struggled in Serie A so far this season as they sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table after 23 matches with just ten victories, five draws and eight defeats thus far. The Neapolitans have been poor even in victory so far this season with the pressure growing on Walter Mazzarri.

Mazzarri, who returned to the club during the November international break replacing Rudi Garcia, most recently oversaw Napoli suffering a 1-0 loss at San Siro against AC Milan last Sunday. Napoli have won just have won just four of their last 11 matches across all competitions with three 2-1 wins against the bottom three and another win in the semi-final of the Supercoppa Italiana.

GENOA

Genoa have enjoyed a very impressive campaign in Serie A so far this season after they gained promotion from Serie B last season. 2006 Italian FIFA World Cup winner Alberto Gilardino is leading the Genovese to a comfortable mid-table finish with the 777 Partners-owned club aiming to propel themselves into the top-half.

They do, though, come into this one on the back of being humbled by four goals to one by the in-form team in the division, Atalanta. They were level after 54 minutes but late goals from Davide Zappacosta and El Bilal Toure for the Bergamasci turned it into something of a rout. That defeat ended an eight-match unbeaten run of form.

THE TEAM NEWS

NAPOLI

Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has been given time off after the Africa Cup of Nations, whilst defender Juan Jesus is missing through suspension.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-1-1): Gollini; Ostigard, Rrahmani, Natan; Di Lorenzo, Anguissa, Lobotka, Zielinski, Mazzocchi; Kvaratskhelia; Simeone

UNAVAILABLE: Juan Jesus (Suspended), Osimhen (Personal reasons)

QUESTIONABLE:

GENOA

Genoa have a couple of injury concerns for this weekend’s clash with the reigning champions. Ridgeciano Haps will be unavailable with Alan Matturro a doubt.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Martinez; Vogliacco, Bani, Vasquez; Sabelli, Malinovsky, Badelj, Strootman, Frendrup; Retegui, Gudmundsson

UNAVAILABLE: Haps (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Matturro (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Napoli are not only underperforming their own standards and expectations but they also come into this weekend with the distraction of having to play Barcelona in the first-leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie in a few days. They face a Genoa side that will be confident despite their 4-1 loss to Atalanta because the visitors are really building and improving as the season grows. Napoli have recently conceded at home to the likes of Hellas Verona and Salernitana so Genoa should be more than capable of bloodying the Neapolitans’ nose once more.
