THE LOWDOWN

MONZA

With the late Silvio Berlusconi involved with the club until his passing and his son being the honorary president, Monza have had significant financial backing on their rise. They were promoted to the Italian top-flight for the first time ever in 2022 and after another summer of investment finished firmly in the middle-of-the-table.

After establishing themselves, Monza will be expecting to take a further step and challenge for a top seven finish with potential European qualification. They began the season with a 2-1 defeat at home to Reggiana of the second-tier in the Coppa Italia and have now suffered three successive to nil defeats against Inter, Empoli and Atalanta.

LECCE

Lecce, following promotion in 2022, achieved an impressive mid-table finish last season playing some genuinely enjoyable football along the way, under the management of Marco Baroni. However, Baroni has now left the club to join Hellas Verona and he has been replaced by former Benevento coach Roberto D’Aversa.

Despite that potential disruption to the team, Lecce have actually began the season with some reasonable performances. The visitors’ opening day saw them surprisingly defeat last season’s runners’ up Lazio by two goals to one before then taking a shock point in Florence away to Fiorentina. After that they managed to cruise to a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Salernitana.

THE TEAM NEWS

LECCE

Roberto D’Aversa has no fresh injury or lack of availability concerns and the visitors will therefore be able to name an unchanged eleven for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Falcone; Gendrey, Pongracic, Baschirotto, Gallo; Kaba, Ramadani, Rafia; Almqvist, Krstovic, Banda

THE PREDICTION

These two were both promoted in 2022 and then both achieved mid-table finishes of which to build upon in 2023. Monza, with their financial backing, were the team most expected to challenge towards the top-half but with three successive defeats they are struggling down at the bottom end of the table. Lecce, though, have started very well and are actually looking to continue one of their best ever starts to a Serie A season. An entertaining match is in store, regardless of the result, with both teams scoring seeming likely.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
