THE LOWDOWN

INTER MILAN

Internazionale won the Coppa Italia last season by defeating Fiorentina in the final and they also reached the UEFA Champions League before eventually losing by a goal to nil to Manchester City in Istanbul. Inter are now expected to bring their cup competition form into the league with a challenge for the Scudetto.

The home team come into this on the back of a 2-1 win at home to Red Bull Salzburg in their most recent outing in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League in midweek. Inter have suffered just one loss in their opening 12 matches across all competitions as they try and challenge for the title against a resurgent Juventus.

ROMA

Under the management of Jose Mourinho, Roma begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the top-half of the table. They come into this on the back of three successive victories in Serie A. They managed a 2-0 win over Slavia Prague in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League as they continue a major improvement in their form.

The Romans headed into the third season of Jose Mourinho and that is when things are expected or usually go quite wrong for the club. It started very badly with just one win in their opening six matches but the introduction and eventual settling in of Romelu Lukaku has helped the capital city club majorly improve.

THE TEAM NEWS

INTER MILAN

Simone Inzaghi is without two key, experienced players for this weekend’s game against Roma at San Siro with Juan Cuadrado and Marko Arnautovic unavailable.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Sommer; Pavard, de Vrij, Acerbi; Darmian, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Martinez

UNAVAILABLE: Cuadrado (Injured), Arnautovic (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

ROMA

Jose Mourinho is missing several key players for this one with the likes of Lorenzo Pellegrini, Paulo Dybala and Tammy Abraham remaining sidelined.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Patricio; Mancini, Cristante, Ndicka; Karsdorp, Bove, Paredes, Aouar, Spinazzola; Belotti, Lukaku

UNAVAILABLE: Azmoun (Injured), Dybala (Injured), Pellegrini (Injured), Sanches (Injured), Abraham (Injured), Kumbulla (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Smalling (Injured), Spinazzola (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

On a Sunday evening in which four Italy’s big hitters face off, with Napoli taking on AC Milan at San Paolo later on, this may not necessarily be a big thriller between two overly entertaining teams. Both managers’ success in cup competitions is often down to their pragmatism and reactivity with the two coaches capable of setting up game plans of controlling their opposition. They are both in good form and a low-scoring encounter between two teams that are on top of their game, which is a defensive game, seems likely.
