THE LOWDOWN

EMPOLI

It has been a really difficult for campaign for Empoli and Aurelio Andreazzoli, who returned to the club to replace Paolo Zanetti in September, coming under increasing pressure as they appeared destined for a return to Serie B this season. They were beaten 2-1 by fellow strugglers Hellas Verona in their most recent outing, last weekend.

That loss to Verona made it successive defeats after being hammered 3-0 by AC Milan the week before. Empoli are now winless in their last eight matches since their shock defeat of defending champions Napoli before the November international break. They are comfortably the lowest scorers in the division with just 11 goals scored so far this season.

MONZA

Monza gained promotion to the top-flight for the first time ever in 2022 and they have been genuinely impressive as they seek a top-half finish in just their second season in Serie A. The ambitious and fairly wealthy club come into this one on the back of some really indifferent and fairly poor form of late, though.

The visitors were thrashed 5-1 by league leaders last weekend and that continued what has been an underwhelming run. Monza have managed just one win in their last five games and just two victories in their last nine as their ambitious hopes of finishing in the top seven and the European spots begin to wane.

THE PREDICTION

These two sides have combined for just 31 goals in their 20 matches so far this season. Empoli are really struggling down at the bottom and it appears almost inevitable that they will return to Serie B. However, they are now hosting a Monza side that have struggled to get victories on the board as they sit firmly in the middle of a congested table. A result might be a little tough to call this weekend but it does appear very likely that it will be a low-scoring encounter.
