THE LOWDOWN

BOLOGNA

Bologna have overcome a slight blip over the New Year to come into this one back in the hunt for a top four spot and potential UEFA Champions League qualification. They begin this weekend sitting sixth in the table and just three points outside of Atalanta in the top four, ending a five-match winless run of form across all competitions with a win last weekend.

Under the management of Thiago Motta, Bologna have been very impressive and play anentertaining and enterprising style of football but the recent absence of Joshua Zirkzee simply exacerbated a goal scoring issue. However, his return helped them share a 2-2 draw with AC Milan and then he didn’t even notch as they defeated Sassuolo by four goals to two last week.

LECCE

Despite losing their manager, Marco Baroni, to Hellas Verona over the summer, Lecce have been reasonable throughout the campaign as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting firmly in mid table. They have managed five victories with nine defeats and nine draws in their 23 matches in Serie A so far this season.

They did earn a long winless run with a much-needed victory against Fiorentina last weekend. They were losing that game before Roberto Piccoli and Patrick Dorgu scored in second-half stoppage-time to turn the game around. Prior to that one, though, they were winless in six matches but they remain well clear of the bottom three.

THE TEAM NEWS

BOLOGNA

Key central midfielder Michel Aebischer is missing from this weekend due to suspension, whilst Adama Soumaoro is missing as a result of an ACL injury.

QUESTIONABLE:

LECCE

Kastriot Dermaku remains a doubt for Lecce this weekend and they are also going to be missing Valentin Gendrey as a result of suspension.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Falcone; Venuti, Pongracic, Baschirotto, Gallo; Kaba, Blin; Almqvist, Oudin, Banda; Krstovic

UNAVAILABLE: Gendrey (Suspended)

QUESTIONABLE: Dermaku (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

On paper, this one seems like a bit of a mis-match. In the last month or so, Bologna have endured a difficult run of form but it does appear that Thiago Motta’s men have come through that as they once again try and challenge for the top four. They are facing a Lecce side that had been in terrible form until their dramatic victory last weekend but it was not necessarily a win that suggests a sustainable good run of form. Bologna, especially with their home advantage are firm favourites for this one.
