THE LOWDOWN

BOLOGNA

Thiago Motta’s reign in charge of Bologna has been exceptional since he was given the job at the start of the 2022/23 campaign. The former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder is leading a Bologna side that is challenging for a top four or five finish and potential UEFA Champions League qualification for next season.

The home team come into this on the back of a 3-0 hammering at the hands of a lowly and struggling Udinese side in their most recent outing, last weekend, prior to the New Year. That was just their third defeat this season in 18 games but they have struggled for goals throughout the campaign, notching just 21 times this season.

GENOA

Following promotion last season, under the management of Alberto Gilardino, an ambitious summer transfer window has been followed by a relatively underwhelming 2023/24 campaign. They sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table ahead of this weekend’s round poof fixtures with Gilardino under a little bit of pressure.

That pressure, though, has eased in recent times with Genoa suffering just one loss in their last five Serie A matches. They had been intending to play a bit more of a proactive style of football than was expected. In reality, they have scored just 19 goals in their 18 games, letting in 23 but both teams have scored in six of their last eight matches.

GENOA

Genoa have no fresh injury concerns or fresh suspension issues for this weekend’s trip to Bologna so they can name an unchanged side.

THE PREDICTION

These are two teams that, on paper, would have headed into the season with an ambitious mindset – both in terms of results and their style of football. Bologna have punched above their weight to challenge for the top four, whilst Genoa have been more than respectable as they sit firmly in mid-table. They have, though, both been lacking in attack with the two teams combining for just 40 goals in their 18 games apiece so far this season. As a result, an even and low-scoring contest is to be expected.

TIP: UNDER 3.5 GOALS
