THE LOWDOWN
ATALANTA
Gian Piero Gasperini is onto another rebuild of his Atalanta side and they will be expected to push towards the top four this season with the Bergamasci able to reinvest their Rasmus Hojlund money quite well. The likes of Charles De Ketelaere, Gianluca Scamacca and El Bilal Toure all joined over the summer.
They come into this, though, on the back of an inconsistent start to the domestic campaign. The home team have managed two victories and two defeats in Serie A so far this season. Their most recent outing was a comfortable and impressive 2-0 defeat of Polish Ekstraklasa side Rakow Czestochowa in the UEFA Europa League in midweek.
CAGLIARI
Under the management of Claudio Ranieri, Cagliari gained promotion back to Serie A at the first time of asking following their relegation to Serie B in 2022. The Sardinians aren’t expected to be in trouble much in this campaign but they will remain one of the weaker sides, reliant on the former Chelsea and Leicester manager’s defensive organisation.
They have started the 2023/24 Serie A campaign by collecting just two points in their opening four matches as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom three and the relegation places. They come into this on the back of a goalless draw with Udinese in their most recent outing, last weekend.

Claudio Ranieri will have to deal with a couple of injuries such as Gaston Pereiro and Gianluca Lapadula, as well as the suspended Mateusz Wieteska.
PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Radunovic; Goldaniga, Dossena, Hatzidiakos; Zappa, Makoumbou, Prati, Deiola, Augello; Pavoletti, Luvumbo

THE PREDICTION
This one may not be as straightforward as it appears on paper. Atalanta haven’t yet gelled together in their latest evolution as a side, despite their victory against the Polish champions in midweek. The Bergamo club now take on a Cagliari side that, under Claudio Ranieri, will be stubborn as they try and build their way into the campaign but the Sardinians remain winless after four matches. Atalanta may remain slight favourites but a low-scoring encounter seems likely, regardless of the winner.
