THE LOWDOWN

AC MILAN

After an impressive summer transfer window in which the Rossoneri have done well to reinvest the Sandro Tonali money, who was sold to Newcastle United, in a smart and efficient manner, AC Milan will be looking to reclaim their title under the management of Stefano Pioli. They finished third and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League but will look to build on that this time around.

Despite some of their new signings not yet being involved, Milan began in very impressive fashion last weekend as they went to a strong Bologna side, coached by Thiago Motta, and cruised to a 2-0 victory with two goals early on scored by Olivier Giroud, who had appeared ‘off it’ in pre-season, and one of their new signings Christian Pulisic.

TORINO

Under the management of Ivan Juric, Torino often flattered to deceive last season. The former Hellas Verona boss is renowned for a progressive and front foot style of football but the Turin club had difficulty in finding the back of the net last season as they finished firmly in mid-table, failing to really push towards the top seven and the UEFA Europa Conference League qualification spots.

They have begun the 2023/24 Serie A campaign in similar and typical fashion at home to newly-promoted Cagliari, sharing a goalless draw at home to Claudio Ranieri’s Sardinians. Despite having 58% of the ball and 11 shots, Torino managed just two on target and there is pressure growing on Paraguayan Tonny Sanabria as he continues to be quite ineffective for a side with ambitions of finishing in the top seven.

THE TEAM NEWS

AC MILAN

The injury to Ismael Bennacer derailed Milan’s season mid-way through last year but the added options of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tijani Reijnders means that is now less of a concern for Stefano Pioli.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Maignan; Calabria, Tomori, Thiaw, Hernandez; Loftus-Cheek, Krunic, Reijnders; Pulisic, Giroud, Leao

UNAVAILABLE: Bennacer (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

TORINO

Ivan Juric’s issue with Torino has often been a lack of goal scoring but they have very little they can chance for this weekend so Tonny Sanabria will likely keep his place up-front.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Milinkovic-Savic; Schuurs, Buongiorno, Rodriguez; Bellanova, Ilic, Ricci, Vojvoda; Radonjic, Vlasic; Sanabria

UNAVAILABLE: Djidji (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

THE PREDICTION

AC Milan are many people’s tips for the Serie A title this season and Stefano Pioli has plenty of options available to him for this weekend’s clash. Torino struggle to score and they are unlikely to trouble such a solid and capable defence of Milan, with the likes of Davide Calabria, Theo Hernandez, Fikayo Tomori and Mike Maignan. So, as long as Milan click a couple of times going forward, this one appears a fairly comfortable victory for the 2022 Serie A champions, especially at San Siro.
