THE LOWDOWN

AC MILAN

After a very heavy summer of spending, which was aided by the sale of Sandro Tonali to Newcastle United, it would perhaps be fair for Stefano Pioli to view this season as something of a transitional campaign ahead of really challenging back at the top of the table next season to try and reclaim the Scudetto.

The Rossoneri come into this one on the back of a continuation of their thrilling and entertaining run of form. Milan came from 2-1 down late on to defeat Frosinone by three goals to two in the capital city of Rome last weekend. They are now unbeaten in their last eight Serie A matches with their 23 matches consisting of 73 goals so far.

NAPOLI

Walter Mazzarri is just about staving off enough pressure to remain in charge of Napoli, despite a continuation of their underwhelming performances of late. The Neapolitans had to come from behind late on and required an 87th minute winning goal from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to defeat struggling Hellas Verona by two goals to one, last weekend.

The defending champions, already on their second manager of the campaign after Mazzarri replaced Rudi Garcia during the November international break, are only just sitting inside the top seven and the European spots ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures with a lack of rhythm and fluency all over the pitch.

THE PREDICTION

These are the last two winners of the Serie A title and both have underperformed their pre-season expectations but to very different extents. AC Milan have eased themselves into a good run of form as they prepare for UEFA Europa League knockout playoff action this week against Stade Rennais of Ligue 1. They face the defending champions who have been miserable; even when scraping through games against strugglers, it has been unenjoyable. A home win is to be expected on Sunday evening.

TIP: AC MILAN TO WIN
