THE LOWDOWN

AC MILAN

Under the management of Stefano Pioli, AC Milan are seeking to reclaim the Serie A title after they last won it in 2022, before relinquishing it to Napoli. The Rossoneri were impressive over the summer transfer window with the sale of Sandro Tonali being followed by some good additions, adding quality and depth across the entire squad.

Pioli’s side suffered a 5-1 hammering at the hands of Internazionale in the Derby della Madonnina a few years ago. However, bar that loss, they have managed seven victories in their other eight matches as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting at the top-of-the-table. They have had two goalless draws in two games in the UEFA Champions League group stages, too.

JUVENTUS

Massimiliano Allegri’s time at Juventus has been pouring, rather than raining. The Old Lady, after missing out on European qualification due to UEFA’s disqualification and a points deduction, are now dealing with suspensions to both Paul Pogba, due to doping, and also Nicolo Fagioli, due to his involvement in the ongoing scandal with regards to illegal betting in Italian football.

They have been steady at the start of the 2023/24 season with one loss in their eight matches in Serie A so far this season. They come into this on the back of a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Torino a couple of weeks ago. They have conceded just six goals so far this season as they return to Allegri’s ideal style of extremely tedious, defensive play.

THE TEAM NEWS

AC MILAN

Stefano Pioli has a bit of a goalkeeping crisis with his first and choice unavailable, as well as the likes of Theo Hernandez and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Mirante; Florenzi, Thiaw, Tomori, Calabria; Musah, Adli, Reijnders; Chukwueze, Giroud, Pulisic

UNAVAILABLE: Maignan (Suspended), Hernandez (Suspended), Sportiello (Injured), Loftus-Cheek (Injured), Caldara (Injured), Bennacer (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

JUVENTUS

Juventus are without both Nicolo Fagioli and Paul Pogba for the foreseeable, as well as defenders Mattia De Sciglio, Alex Sandro and Danilo.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Rugani; Weah, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot, Kostic; Kean, Milik

UNAVAILABLE: Fagioli (Suspended), Pogba (Suspended), Danilo (Injured), Alex Sandro (Injured), De Sciglio (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Chiesa (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

AC Milan are one of the stronger sides in Italian football, once again, but it is their UEFA Champions League record that is perhaps most influential and important in determining and predicting how this game will go. Juventus will go to San Siro thinking that a point will be a successful outcome so that will predictably mean a lack of attacking intent from the visitors. Given Milan’s big games so far this season have either been 0-0 or losing 5-1; the former is far more likely for this one on Sunday evening.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
