THE PREDICTION
Under Gareth Southgate, England have improved to a ridiculous level. From being knocked out in the 2014 FIFA World Cup group stages to reaching the semi-finals four years later and from being beaten by Iceland in the Round of 16 of UEFA Euro 2016 to reaching the final four years later. Improvements can be made but the progress and growth has been phenomenal. One thing that has left even the most die-hard of England supporters underwhelmed is the performances in friendlies. Whilst totally excusable for several reasons, it does tend to frustrate some. Fortunately, The Three Lions haven’t played many friendlies in recent years but the 12 that England have played under Southgate haven’t been great. Back-to-back 1-0 victories over Austria and Romania before UEFA Euro 2020 being an example of that. They now come up against a Swiss side that finished above European champions Italy in qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Their 1-1 draw in Italy in November was sandwiched by comprehensive 4-0 victories over Lithuania and Bulgaria as they made it five successive FIFA World Cup qualifications. Whilst they remain one of the stronger sides in Europe, albeit always underachieving at the actual tournament, they will also be looking to experiment in this friendly. England’s 1-0 victory over Switzerland in a post-2018 FIFA World Cup friendly looks a good example of what might happen here and a low-scoring encounter is expected.
