THE LOWDOWN

UNION BERLIN

Union Berlin had hoped their hard-fought, huge creditable 1-1 draw away to Napoli in the Champions League would serve as a turning point of their season after ending their awful losing run in all competitions. Alas, it was not to be as Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen ruthlessly disposed of them the following weekend, winning 4-0 at the BayArena.

That result brought to an end the memorable five-year reign of Urs Fischer as head coach. He leaves as a Union Berlin legend, guiding the club up to the Bundesliga and achieving the miracle of a top four finish in 2022-23, thus bringing Champions League football to Union. But a nine-match losing streak in the Bundesliga has seen them plunge to the bottom of the table, leaving the Union hierarchy with no choice but to act. Marco Grote takes charge for this game.

AUGSBURG

In a direct contrast to Union’s plight, Augsburg are enjoying an extremely creditable run of form which has seen them pull well clear of the Bundesliga relegation places for now at least. Successive wins have been backed up by a pair of draws, which has left them only out of the top half due to goal difference.

Both 1-1 draws they have competed in most recently saw Augsburg come from behind to take a point, firstly against FC Cologne and most recently at home to Hoffenheim. They also now boast at least one goal in each of their last five Bundesliga fixtures, which has no doubt played a big part in their recent good form.

THE TEAM NEWS

UNION BERLIN

Leonardo Bonucci and Danilho Doekhi will both be missing within the Union defence through injury, as will experienced midfielder Sami Khedira, who is suspended. Forward Sheraldo Becker is also a huge doubt, which should mean that David Datro Fofana ends up partnering Kevin Behrens in a front two.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Ronnow; Jaeckel, Knoche, Leite; Juranovic, Laidouni, Kral, Aaronson, Gosens; Fofana, Behrens

UNAVAILABLE: Bonucci (Injured), Doekhi (Injured), Khedira (Suspended), Schafer (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Becker (Injured)

AUGSBURG

As it stands, Augsburg are only set to be without two players for their trip to the German capital. Midfielder Arne Maier is missing due to an ankle problem, whilst also stuck on the treatment table is Masaya Okugawa, the 27-year-old Japanese midfielder suffering with a foot injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Dahmen; Gumny, Gouweleeuw, Uduokhai, Pedersen; Rexhbecaj, Dorsch; Jensen, Demirovic, Vargas; Tietz

UNAVAILABLE: Maier (Injured), Okugawa (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

What sort of Union Berlin will we see here without Urs Fischer? That is the question everyone is asking ahead of this crucial game. They’ve looked completely toothless going forward and that simply has to change here. But when confidence is so low and the team has spiralled as rapidly as we’ve seen from Union, then it’s hard to see them magically rediscovering any cutting edge offensively. Augsburg will make it difficult for the hosts to breach their backline and a turgid encounter could be in prospect. Regardless of the final outcome, back under 2.5 goals to be scored.

BETTING TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
