THE LOWDOWN

STUTTGART

Stuttgart suffered rare disappointment in what has been an amazing season so far this past Tuesday night. Despite a valiant effort, they were knocked out of the DFB-Pokal at the quarter-finals stage by Bayer Leverkusen in a 3-2 thriller. This came despite them leading twice, as Xabi Alonso’s side rallied back on both occasions and eventually won the game courtesy of a 90th minute winner.

Attention now turns back to Bundesliga matters and there is plenty to be excited about with Stuttgart currently in third-place heading into the latest round of fixtures. The return of star striker Serhou Guirassy following international duty at the 2023 AFCON serves as a huge boost as he looks to add to his 17 Bundesliga goals scored so far this season.

MAINZ

Mainz have still won just one game in the league over the course of the entire 2023-24 campaign so far, which reflected in their current position in the table, inside the bottom three. However, a 1-1 draw against 16th-placed Union Berlin at least keeps them within sight, although that six-point gap needs to be cut sooner rather than later.

It was Mainz who took the lead vs Union, Burkardt scoring in the eighth minute of first half stoppage time, only for the visitors to equalise in the 13th minute of the same period. Neither team could find a winner in the second half with Mainz forced to settle for point and an extension to their current winless streak.

THE TEAM NEWS

STUTTGART

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Nubel; Vagnoman, Anton, Ito, Mittelstadt; Karazor, Stiller; Leweling, Millot, Fuhrich; Guirassy

UNAVAILABLE: Egloff (Injured), Nartey (Injured), Silas (International Duty), Zagadou (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Undav (Injured)

MAINZ

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Zentner; Widmer, Van den Berg, Caci, Mwene; Barreiro, Krauss; Onisiwo, Amiri, Burkardt; Ngankam

UNAVAILABLE: Bell (Illness), Weiper (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Ajorque (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Stuttgart were already in great form from an attacking perspective, racking up ten goals across their last three games in all competitions and Guirassy being back in the squad will only serve to increase their offensive threat. Such firepower going forward should wind up far too strong for Mainz to deal with and any outcome other than victory for Stuttgart at home by at least two clear goals would be seen as a real surprise here.

TIP: STUTTGART TO WIN WITH -1 HANDICAP
