THE LOWDOWN

CAN RESURGANT MAINZ PULL OFF AN UPSET

By the time Mainz kick off here, they will know the results of a number of their relegation rivals, which only enhances the importance of the outcome here against Borussia Dortmund. As it stands, they occupy the relegation play-off place but one more point will likely see them avoid going down automatically due to their goal difference.

Although Mainz are coming off the back of three successive 1-1 draws, they have not lost in the Bundesliga since their 8-1 thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich in March. The hosts are now unbeaten in seven, including three wins at home.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND HAVE ALL EYES ON EUROPEAN GLORY

Borussia Dortmund repeated history in midweek, reaching the Champions League final at Wembley Stadium, as they did back in 2013. This time they made it courtesy of defeating French giants PSG by a goal to nil for the second time, on this occasion in the French capital, Mats Hummels heading the winner from a Julian Brandt corner.

With their place in next season’s Champions League already looked up, motivation may have waned for Edin Terzic’s players when it comes to their Bundesliga commitments, with this match likely more about giving other members of the Borussia Dortmund squad an opportunity to feature whilst some key players rest.

THE PREDICTION

When considering the fact that Borussia Dortmund are expected to field a rotated starting line-up, this has to be seen as a big chance for Mainz to get a result that could see them take a giant leap towards safety. They’ll have a raucous home crowd behind them against a team who will be looking to avoid injuries and not take any undue risks. If ever there was a time to play Borussia Dortmund, it’s now and backing Mainz to pick up at least a point, if not all three looks a shrewd play.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE - MAINZ/DRAW
