THE LOWDOWN

BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH

Absolutely bonkers! That’s how best to describe Borussia Monchengladbach’s opening Bundesliga fixture of the new season. After taking the lead on 13 minutes, no one would have expected a final score of 4-4, but that’s what we got as the goals began to flow with regularity.

It looked as if Augsburg had done enough to win the game after taking the lead for the first time on 76 minutes. However, Gladbach fought back and were rewarded at the death, Tomas Cvancara netting a 97th minute penalty on his first Bundesliga start, his second of the match to secure a point.

BAYER LEVERKUSEN

Bayer Leverkusen made one of the biggest statements in the first weekend of games, taking the prize-scalp of newly crowned DFL-Supercup winners RB Leipzig in a thrilling battle. After taking the lead in the 24th minute through Jeremie Frimpong, the hosts never lost control against Marco Rose’s side, making it 2-0 and then 3-1 later in the piece.

Ultimately, Leverkusen held on for a 3-2 win which saw Florian Wirtz score their third goal. After a 2022-23 season ruined by injury, the 20-year-old German prodigy could be set for a campaign which sees him recognised on the world stage.

THE TEAM NEWS

BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH

Gerardo Seoane is sweating over the fitness of left-back Luca Netz, who was forced off with a muscular problem away at Augsburg. The Gladbach will hope Netz makes it, otherwise he may be forced into a change of formation here. Manu Kone, Christoph Kramer and Hannes Wolf all remain out injured.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Omlin; Scally, Itakura, Wober, Netz; Neuhaus, Weigl; Honorat, Plea, Ngoumou; Cvancara

UNAVAILABLE: Kone (Injured), Kramer (Injured), Lainer (Illness), Wolf (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Netz (Injured)

BAYER LEVERKUSEN

Unless any unexpected injuries have cropped up late in the week, it would be surprise to see Xabi Alonso make any changes to his starting XI. Amine Adli and Piero Hincapie both miss out through suspension, whilst Patrik Schick remains injured. Sardar Azmoun also won’t feature as he finalises his imminent move to Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Hradecky; Kossounoui, Tah, Tapsoba; Frimpong, Palacios, Xhaka, Grimaldo; Hofmann, Boniface, Wirtz

UNAVAILABLE: Adli (Suspended), Hincapie (Suspended), Schick (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

When taking into account that a whopping 13 goals were scored over the course of the two fixtures last weekend involving Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen, it’s easy to see why so many are looking to this match-up. Neither covered themselves in glory defensively last time out to say the least, but those fragilities are masked by the unrelenting, exciting offensive play shown by both sides, who each possess creativity and cutting edge in abundance. It’s hard not to see another game where attack triumphs over defence at each end of the pitch and regardless of the final outcome, backing over 2.5 goals and both teams to score has to be favoured.

TIP: OVER 2.5 GOALS AND BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
